2 Five Pillars of Literacy Instruction
1.Phonemic Awareness 2.Phonics ​ 3.Fluency ​ 4.Vocabulary​ 5.Text Comprehension

3 Phonemic Awareness ~The knowledge that words are made up of a combination of individual sounds​. ~Although there are 26 letters in the English language, there are approximately 40 phonemes, or sound units, in the English language. ~See handout for list of phonemes, their spellings and examples

4 Examples of Phonemic Awareness Skills
~Blending: What word am I trying to say? Mmmmm...oooooo...p. ~Segmentation (first sound isolation): What is the first sound in mop? /m/ ~Segmentation (last sound isolation): What is the last sound in mop? /p/ ~Segmentation (complete): What are all the sounds you hear in mop? /m/ /o/ /p/

5 Strategies for Tricky Words
*Phonics is used when a reader comes across an unknown word (tricky word handout) ~Look at the pictures ~Get your lips ready to make the first sounds ~Stretch it out ~Chunk the word ~Skip it, come back ~Flip the vowel (short/long sounds) ~Try it again ~Ask for help

6 Reading with fluency ~Expression- do not sound like a robot
~Rate- don’t read too fast. Don’t read too slow ~Accuracy- read the right words ~Punctuation- ( . ) stop and pause at a period ( ? ) read it like a question ( ! ) read it with feeling ( “ “) read it with expression

7 Comprehension ~Comprehension is the ability to make meaning from what the text says both explicitly and implicitly. ~ The goal of comprehension instruction is to teach children specific strategies to use for understanding text as they read.

8 Before Reading ~At beginning of new book: -What do you think this book will be about? Why do you think that? -What characters do you think might be in this story? -What are you wondering about as you look at the cover and back of your book?

9 During Reading -What do you think will happen next? Why? -Why do you think the character did __________________? How do you know? - How would you have felt if that happened to you? - What does the character/setting look like in your mind? -Can you put what you’ve just read in your own words? -What’s happened to this character so far? - Tell me the most important things you read today in order of how they happened

10 After Reading At the end of a book: -What was the big idea? -Name the characters and setting -Retell the most important events in the story from beginning, middle, and end. - What were the most important events in this story? (Problem and Solution)

11 Building Stamina ~ Allow children to read BOTH; books on their reading level as well as books that interest them ~Create a comfy reading space in your home ~Interactive stories and books on the computer ~Be good role models ~Make reading a part of family time ~Set a timer and keep track of progress
