Technologists need to read books, articles, reports, proposals and many other types of documents about technology Technologists also need to write about technology; they need to communicate their ideas to others clearly and unambiguously The vocabulary, concepts, use of diagrams and so on are different in technology

Approaches to reading When you read, your purpose will be: to amuse yourself to inform yourself to learn IF your purpose is to learn How should you approach your reading

4 When reading the Novel Forming a mental picture
We engage with the text, forming mental pictures as we read, and modifying these pictures where necessary. have preconceptions about the mental pictures we draw Connect the pieces of the pictures together to form a bigger picture

5 Reading to learn forming mental ‘pictures’ – concepts
Readers of any document often have preconceptions about the subject matter – and may have to modify them in order to learn. Readers who want to learn tie together the various concepts they are forming, while reading, into a coherent whole. at the end of their reading pause and reflect on what they have got out of their reading and what they intend to do with it.

Don’t try to register the sound of the word in your head How to stop it???? By putting a finger on your lips Be comfortable while reading Increase your vocabulary

12 Sometimes you do not need to understand an article fully to answer all the question
If your understanding is about 80% it is fine Try to skim the article

13 Dealing with difficult document
Page 8 of book Skills says that you read Article 7 from book Documents I suggest that you do and try to follow the book in the process

14 How should you be writing these
Rank the following according to the formality of the language and style that are likely to be used. An to a friend thanking her for a Christmas present. An engineering report prepared for a large company by a firm of consultants. An message to a more senior colleague explaining why you can’t attend a meeting. A school science textbook for ten to twelve year olds.
