Beyond Color Lines read for comprehension locate opinions in text “before you move on” questions G. Hughes, Virgil MS

Beyond Color Lines – Read for Comprehension Listen to the recording. Follow along with your finger. Be ready to say the next word in the text when called on. G. Hughes, Virgil MS

Reading Strategy Distinguishing Fact vs. Opinion With your partner, reread what Janell, Jenny, and Christian have to say about living in two cultures. Look for opinions that each person states. Look for signal words. On each note card, write the opinions that each of the three states. G. Hughes, Virgil MS

Beyond Color Lines Stating Your Own Opinion For each opinion you wrote on the chart, write one complete sentence that states your opinion and the reason you feel that way. EXAMPLE: I agree with Christian that it is important to look at the way people are similar because there are many things that we all have in common. G. Hughes, Virgil MS

Before You Move On- Questions Section 2 (Jenny) 1. What is Jenny’s background and family history? 2. According to Jenny, why do some people have trouble accepting others? What advice does she give? (two sentences) 3. What might you say or do if you saw people laughing at someone?

Before You Move On- Questions Section 3 (Christian) 1. According to Christian, how do children and adults differ in adjusting to a new country? 2. On a soccer team, skin color is not important, what is? 3. Write all the words on pages 96-97 that have to do with skin color and national origin.

The One and Only You Writing a self-portrait Write a three paragraph self-portrait describing yourself. In paragraph one, tell who you are, where you are from, and what you like to do. In paragraph two, explain a custom that makes your culture special to you. In paragraph three, explain how living in two cultures is difficult or easy. Tell what you think and how you feel. Explain how it is difficult or easy.
