To know how to build self-esteem.

2 Self-Esteem Success Criteria
To make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. To discuss the importance of self-esteem

3 What is Self Esteem? Self-esteem means having a good opinion of yourself. It is based on understanding what your strengths are and valuing yourself as a person.

4 Talk Partners Tell the person next to you 3 of your good points (things that you are good at) and 3 of your bad points (things that you could be better at). 2 minutes

5 Write it down! Fold your page half and draw a line down the middle. On 1 side write ‘strengths’ and on another write ‘weaknesses’. Now record your own strengths and weaknesses. EXTENSION: Are any strengths more useful than others? 5 minutes

6 Activity: Spider Diagram
INCLUDE 8 positive things about me 2 things people say they like about me 2 new experiences I’ve had in the last year 2 things that I’ve achieved At least 2 reasons friends value my friendship 10 minutes

7 Activity: Do you agree with…
If you agree, go and stand by the door If you disagree, go and stand by the back wall 1. What other people think of you and your behaviour is more important than what you think yourself. 2. It’s not being conceited (big headed) to feel proud of yourself and your achievements.

If you agree, go and stand by the door If you disagree, go and stand by the back wall 3. It’s not what you look like that matters, it’s what kind of person you are and how you feel about yourself. 4. If you’re not confident about something, it’s better to avoid doing it rather than risk making a fool of yourself.

If you agree, go and stand by the door If you disagree, go and stand by the back wall 5. People who keep putting you down only do so to try to make themselves feel better. 6. Imitating people by doing whatever is regarded as cool and trendy is the best way to boost your confidence.

10 Plenary There are 5 tips on how you can build your self-esteem. See if you can explain to the class why they might work. EXT: Are there any others? 1. Think positively 4. Stand up for yourself 3. Be able to cope with criticism 5. Be realistic with your aims 2. Take risks
