Social Conflict

There are multiple definitions of social conflict Trying to meet your own goals by using threat/violence A struggle because of values or demands Oppositional social interaction Trying to get rid of another party (pihak) by destroying them or making them powerless.

What is the difference between social conflict and genocide? Genocide is a very specific term, referring to violent crimes committed against groups with the intent to destroy the existence of the group. In 1944, Polish Jewish lawyer Raphael Lemkin (1900-1959) coined the term "genocide" in a book about Nazis. He formed the word by combining geno-, from the Greek word for race or tribe, with -cide, from the Latin word for killing.  Famous examples? Sudan, Rwanda, Armenians, Jews, Native Americans http://www.genocidewatch.org/alerts/newsalerts.html

When does social conflict occur? A society is not accommodating certain people A person/group has an obstacle that is in the way of their purpose/goal How long does it occur? Hundreds of years (slavery, occupation) or for minutes (an argument with a friend) Until a solution has been reached or one side dominants the other Between whom does it occur? Individuals or groups

Causes of Social Conflict Competing for power, status, resources Differences in behavior, religion, race, culture, knowledge, ability, interests, needs Emotions: fear, hate, anger Primordialism Ethnocentrism

Primordialism Ethnocentrism Key word Favoring someone who is like you Judging others based on your culture What does it affect? Getting jobs Choosing groups Culture Assimilation Example: I am Chinese, Christian, Male looking for a job. I will have a good chance of being hired by another Chinese, Christian male. The way that Chinese people do things is the best. Example: I am an East Timorese Catholic who owns a business in Surabaya.

Activity List A: List the 5 people you are close to List B: List 5 people who you know but you are not close to List 2-3 behaviors that annoy you. So, do more serious conflicts happen between you and your loved ones or you and acquaintances (kenalan)? (p. 90) Partial social relationship Personal/private social relationships Suppress feelings to avoid conflict? Microaggressions Ingroup conflict vs. outgroup conflict (p. 96)

Mindmap of you and social conflict A society is not accommodating you Mindmap of you and social conflict A society is not accommodating you. I have an obstacle that is in the way of my purpose/goal Co-workers (political) Groups of people trying to suppress American influence because of our ideals of freedom Ms. Sarah American 27 Well-educated Female Christian White Upper-middle class Teacher Students (difference of interest, ethnocentrism) Creepy bapaks who ask too many questions and stand too close. Women’s movements to bring awareness to these issues. Beliefs about race: other white people think that “All lives matter” and reject “Black lives matter” Individual differences of how to interpret the Bible

Reflection Write about a serious conflict that you are currently having right now or that you had recently. Who are the other people involved? What is his/her/their perspective(s)? Reflect deeply about what the cause of that conflict is. Look back at your notes to help you describe the source of the conflict. Use pages 90-98 to help you. Do conflicts of this nature come up a lot? Why is that?

The positive and negative effects of social conflict (p. 98 and 100) -improves solidarity - Makes people more independent - Makes people/group able to work together better. - Makes laws, values, norms clearer - Breaks a group apart - Being too powerful can lead to isolation if you need help later. - Altering individual personalities you benefit teamwork. - More inequality because one side dominants. In the end, which outweighs the other? The positive or the negative? Which Sociologist believed that deviance moved society forward? Do you think he would think the same of social conflict?

Violence What do you think of when you see this word? Writing reflection. Direct violence: physical injury, death, material damage Indirect violence: limiting, decreasing, or getting rid of people’s rights

What leads to violence? People use irrational behavior The social structure lacks a way for people to deal with frustration or dissatisfaction Example: dictatorship A majority of people feel norms and values are violated A growing feeling of hatred Mobilization for action Social control forces people to stop
