Heat Practice Questions

Questions 1-5 On the next 5 slides, there are picture examples of heat concepts we learned in class.

Heat Transfer 1. Describe the movement of heat when you touch a hot pot on the stove. (What does the heat move OUT of , and what does the heat move INTO)?

Heat Transfer 2. Describe the movement of heat when you hold an ice cube. (What does the heat move OUT of , and what does the heat move INTO)?

Thermal Expansion 3. When it’s cold, the metal ball just barely fits through the hoop. What will happen when the metal ball is heated in fire? (Will it fit through the hoop? Why or why not?)

Temperature 4. Which has a higher temperature – a candle or a bathtub? (Explain your answer.)

Heat Energy 5. Which has more heat energy – a candle or a bathtub? (Explain your answer)

Questions 6-20 On the next 15 slides are picture examples of conduction, convection, and radiation. Look at each picture and READ the description. Explain which type of heat transfer is happening. (Questions 19 and 20 have two answers)

6. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? The spoon is in the hot soup. The hot soup is making the top of the spoon handle hot!

7. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? The flame heats the air. The hot air makes the balloon rise up into the sky. To bring the balloon down, turn off the heat and cool the air.

8. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? The radiator is heating the air in the corner. The air is hotter at the top and cooler at the bottom of the room. Soon the heated air spreads through the whole room.

9. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? This man is warming his hands with the fire. He is not touching the fire, but he feels the heat.

14. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? The Sun is 92,960,000 miles from Earth, but we can still feel the Sun’s heat on Earth.

15. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? This woman is ironing her clothes. The heat from the iron takes the wrinkles out!

16. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? The Sun heats the air and it rises. The cool air moves in to take its place. This causes wind!

17. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? This crowded classroom is hot because of all the people in it!

18. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? It’s so hot outside, you can fry an egg on the sidewalk! The sidewalk (and the egg) are very hot.

19. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? This is a solar cooker. Heat from the Sun comes into the box and heats the pan. Then, the metal pan heats the food inside the pan. There are TWO types of heat transfer in this picture!

20. Conduction, Convection, or Radiation? The glass kettle is sitting on a hot burner. It heats the water, and the water starts to move, spreading the heat. There are TWO types of heat transfer in this picture.

21. Conduction, Convection, AND Radiation (all in one picture). Look at the picture on the next slide. The campers are cooking chili using a campfire, a metal grill, and a metal pot to hold the chili. If you study the picture, you can find examples of ALL THREE types of heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation.) On your answer sheet, explain where each type of energy transfer is happening.
