Science October 29th (A day) October 30th (B day)

2 Warm Up – KWL Chart Draw this chart in your notebook (blank page) Complete the K Column only - What I KNOW What I know K What I Want to know W What I Learned L Conduction Convection Radiation

3 Interactive notebook Find the next blank page in your notebook
Label it: Energy 6.P.3.1: Add this to your table of contents

4 Today’s Objective…. To figure out how thermal energy is it transferred? To figure out how chemical energy can be released and transferred?

5 Write in notebook: Heat (Thermal Energy) Transfer
Energy (heat) can be transferred from 1 system to another or from a system to the environment in different ways (radiation, conduction, convection)

6 Write / Draw in notebook Examples of Heat Transfer

7 Write in notebook Conduction
Energy (heat) flows throughout materials or across space from HOT (WARMER) objects to COLD (COOLER) objects

8 Mr. C “Hot to Cold” Hot to Cold video Music video

9 Thermal Energy… Today we will review how Thermal (heat) energy can travel (3 main ways…) You will receive a graphic organizer to record this information You will write all the information from each slide onto your handout You will also draw a picture

10 Thermal Energy Write this: Heat energy due to the motion of all the particles in an object Heat

11 Conduction Box Write this: Heat traveling through solids when two things are touching Draw this: (example: pan on a stove burner; heat from the burner travels into the metal pan, causing the temperature of the pan to rise) Molecules or atoms collide to each other randomly and during this collision they transfer some part of their energy. With the same way, all energy transferred to the end of the object until it reaches thermal balance. As you can see from the picture, atoms at the bottom of the object first gain energy, their kinetic energies increase, they start to move and vibrate rapidly and collide other atoms and transfer heat. Conduction is commonly seen in solids and a little bit in liquids. In conduction, energy transfer is slow with respect to convection and radiation. Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.

12 Radiation Box Write this: Heat moving across the space between two objects that are not touching Draw this: (If you hold your hand over a pan, near a hot plate or near an iron to see if it is hot)

13 Convection Box Write this: Heat traveling through liquids and gases in a circular pattern (convection currents) Draw this:

14 Remember…..write this on the bottom of your graphic organizer
If 2 things are touching…. conduction If something heated is rising or circulating in liquids or gases….. convection If heat moves across spaces between 2 things that are not touching…. radiation

15 Glue in notebook Glue your thermal energy graphic organizer into your interactive notebook now

16 Mr. Canosa’s Videos Radiation video Conduction video
Tom Canosa radiation and conduction

17 Now its your turn…. You will receive a pie chart handout
We will go over the directions now…. Then I will pass out scissors and glue bottles Remember, if I see anyone putting glue on their hands, I will take up all the glue (you are wasting my classroom supplies) BEFORE YOU GLUE YOUR STATEMENTS DOWN, YOU MUST RAISE YOUR HAND FOR ME TO CHECK IT FIRST!!!!

18 put statement in correct section
Hot coffee is stirred with a spoon and the spoon gets hot CONDUCTION

19 Station 2 - put statement in correct section
A chair is near a fireplace; the side of the chair close to the fireplace gets warm RADIATION

20 Station 3 - put statement in correct section
A lava lamp: bubbles rise to the top and fall to the bottom when the lamp is turned on. CONVECTION

21 Station 4 - put statement in correct section
A college student holds her hand near an iron to see if it is hot. RADIATION

22 Station 5 - put statement in correct section
Warm air rises in a room and cool air sinks in a room. CONVECTION

23 Station 6 - put statement in correct section
Warm water at the surface of the ocean mixes with cooler water at the bottom of the ocean CONVECTION

24 Station 7 - put statement in correct section
You flip your pillow over and it feels cool on your face. CONDUCTION

25 Station 8 - put statement in correct section
You use an electric heating blanket to get warm CONDUCTION
