Graduate assistants are typically full-time graduate students who participate in teaching, research, or administrative activities, upon recommendation from the concerned department, are employed either as teaching or research assistants. Research assistantships are more common than teaching assistantships, and are offered when student capabilities and background experience match the needs of the project. CPT (Curricular practical training) F-1 students may not work off-campus during the first academic year, but may accept on-campus employment subject to certain conditions and restrictions. After the first academic year, F-1 students may engage in three types of off- campus employment: CPT (Curricular practical training) OPT (Optional practical training) STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) OPT extension

CPT (Curricular Practical Training) Curricular practical training (CPT) is an alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education or other type of required practicum that a sponsoring employer offers through cooperative agreements with your college or university. CPT is only available for F-1 students when it is part of an established curriculum within a school. CPT must be integral to your program of study; however, unlike pre-completion OPT, CPT can be full time and is not restricted by a weekly 20-hour work limit.

OPT (Optional Practical Training) All OPT must be directly related to your major area of study. Pre-completion OPT:  You may apply to participate in pre-completion OPT after you have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one full academic year at a college, university. If you are authorized to participate in pre-completion OPT, you may work part time (20 hours or less per week) while school is in session. You may work full time when school is not in session.           Post-completion OPT:  You may apply to participate in post-completion OPT after completing your studies. if you participated in 10 months of pre-completion OPT, you would be eligible for only up to 2 months of post-completion OPT.

STEM OPT extension If you have earned a degree in certain science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, you may apply for a 24-month extension of your post-completion OPT employment authorization
