Aim: How do scientists work? Living Environment - Inquiry

Alone Partner Teams

Listen to the reading on Cooperative Learning Take notes (how do you do that?)

Cooperative Learning Learning is a social event All students share a common goal Each group member is individually accountable Develops listening and leadership skills Respect for others’ views and opinions

Task Roles Facilitator Recorder Reporter Materials Manager Students will take out cards on the task roles and determine who will do what

Task-Group Work Members of the team will each read a section of pages 3 to 7 in text-Answer the questions: 1.What is the goal of science? 2. What is the main difference between qualitative and quantitative observations? 3. How does a scientific theory compare with a scientific hypothesis? 4. What are variables in an experiment?

What is the goal of science? The goal of science is to satisfy human curiosity while discovering and learning new things and solving problems. Also, it is used to help make human life easier.

What is the main difference between qualitative and quantitative observations (data)? The difference between qualitative and quantitative observations is that qualitative observations describe without the use of numbers such as texture or behavior. Quantitative observations involve numbers such as measurements (temperature, time, frequency, distance, measurements, speed).

How does a scientific theory compare with a scientific hypothesis? A hypothesis is a possible explanation for a set of observations or an answer to a scientific question only useful if it can be tested. A scientific theory is a hypothesis that is supported by many tests and facts.

What are the variables in an experiment? Variables are conditions that change (temp, pH, etc.) If a scientist is not able to control the relevant variables, they might not be able to derive an accurate conclusion from the observations.
