6th Grade Social Studies Urbanization

I can identify urbanization I can identify the cause of urbanization Best guess Where are people moving from? Where do you think people are moving to?

What is urbanization The movement of people from rural to urban areas What are the causes of urbanization?

The History of Urbanization The process of urbanization has been going on for a long, long time on Earth. It began in four ancient River Valley civilizations The History of Urbanization Four Old World River Valley Cultures. Brooklyn college of the City University of New York. 30 November 2012 <http://acc6.its.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~phalsall/images/riv-vall.gif>. 10,000 – 5,500 years ago What has allowed for urbanization to occur?

Farming allowed people to develop food surpluses and changes in technology allowed people to store food. These developments permitted population growth and resulted in the settlement of denser populations. Food surpluses and larger populations enabled people to specialize because not everyone had to put their energy into food production. This spawned the development of new types of jobs in these agrarian, village-based societies. New problems emerged as people lived in larger groups in settled villages. Social institutions changed and developed to respond to these changes and to address these new problems.

What was the industrial revolution? industrial revolution was marked by the economic change from an agricultural-based economy toward machine-based manufacturing. Inventions and technological innovations created the factory system of large-scale machine production. This led to greater economic specialization. Why did the growth of factories contribute to urbanization???? factories created jobs and people from rural areas moved closer to the factories in the hope of finding jobs and perhaps a better life. The equipment create by the Industrial Revolution was used by farmers allowing them to use less workers and produce a surplus of food.

A Country Example What country is this? Urbanization in China. World Resources Institute. 30 November 2012 <http://www.wri.org/files/wri/china_urban_population.png>. What country is this?

Urbanization the movement of people from rural to urban areas

Urbanization in China By the end of the 1940s, China had only 69 cities. In 2007, it had 670 cities, almost ten times as many. Increasing urbanization is the result of migration from villages, as well as natural increase, leading to the expansion of small towns which have been reclassified as cities. Of these cities, 89 have a population of over a million, compared to 37 in the United States and 32 in India. “China's rapid urbanization in bird's eye pictures.” Urbanization in China. 30 November 2012 <http://urbanlabglobalcities.blogspot.com/2011/12/chinas-rapid-urbanization-in-birds-eye.html>.

Mega City is a city with over 10 million people World Urbanization Prospects. United Nations. Department of Economic and Social Affairs. 30 November 2012 <http://esa.un.org/unpd/wpp/ppt/CSIS/WUP_2011_CSIS_4.pdf>. describe the demographic trend shown on the two graphs how is the rapid increase in megacities likely to impact the Earth.

Analyzing Data on Megacities ACTIVITY Analyzing Data on Megacities Analyze the data in small groups and come up with two important ‘data discoveries’. come up with two important ‘data discoveries’ to share in the large group

Megacity Data Cities With 10 Million Inhabitants or More, 1950, 2007, and 2025 (in millions)

Analyzing Data on Megacities ACTIVITY Analyzing Data on Megacities Analyze the data in small groups and come up with two important ‘data discoveries’. In 1950 there were only 2 megacities but by 2007 there were 19. Many of the megacities in 2025 are in countries that are currently less developed countries. China will have 4 megacities by 2025. Tokyo, Japan continues to be the largest megacity by far. In 2025, seven out of the ten largest megacities will be in Asia.

Why do people move to cities? Possible Push Factors Possible Pull Factors

Why do people move to cities? What are these examples of? Jobs More opportunities A chance for a better life Education A greater variety of goods A greater variety of cultural activities

The Need for an Urban World “Massive urbanization is the only way the world can survive the massive population increase. Urban areas offer a higher life expectancy and lower absolute poverty, and can provide essential services more cheaply and on a larger scale than rural areas. The problem has never been that cities are worse places to live - they are in fact much better for the poor - the problem is that cities have more and more people living in them and relying on their services.” - Dr. Mathias Hundsalz, coordinator of the United Nations Habitat Report “Backgrounder 2.” Global Report on Human Settlements. United Nations Cyber School. 30 November 2012 <http://www.un.org/cyberschoolbus/habitat/background/bg2.asp>.

Which area would be easier to supply with water and electricity? Urban Rural Urban area allow governments to supply services to more people in a smaller area. last few slides show that urbanization is negative or positive?

What do think is the major cause of urbanizations problems? Time required to reach 2 million population: Rome, Italy 2000 years Vienna, Austria 400 years Vancouver, B.C. 115 years Shenzhen, China 20 years What is the problem with this growth??

ACTIVITY Analyzing Cartoons http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/opinion/2010-11/25/content_11605987.htm

What DO you see What is the ‘message’ about cities and urbanization?

What are some problems of urbanization? World Urbanization Prospects. United Nations. Department of Economic and Social Affairs. 30 November 2012 <http://esa.un.org/unpd/wpp/ppt/CSIS/WUP_2011_CSIS_4.pdf>. What are some problems of urbanization?

Are slums a global problem? Why or why not? Slums are frequently a part of urbanization especially when it occurs rapidly. Slums a run-down area of a city with inadequate housing and lack of services such as water and sanitation World Urbanization Prospects. United Nations. Department of Economic and Social Affairs. 30 November 2012 <http://esa.un.org/unpd/wpp/ppt/CSIS/WUP_2011_CSIS_4.pdf>. Are slums a global problem? Why or why not?

Problems found in urban areas If slums only exist in urban areas, could they be a global problem since they don’t impact rural people? If lots of people lead quality lives in cities, could slums still be a global problem? Crime Lack of jobs Air pollution Disease Deforestation Transportation Is urbanization itself a global problem? Why or why not?
