Disabled Students Programs & Services On-Line Orientation 5/6/2019 Disabled Students Programs & Services On-Line Orientation This is an on-line orientation of Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSP&S) at Reedley College and the North Centers (Willow International, Madera, & Oakhurst). The DSP&S Department at Reedley College was established in 1975 to support the academic and/or vocational goals of students with physical, learning or psychological disabilities. Disabled Students Programs & Services Online Orientation This presentation has been developed to: Introduce you to Disabled Students Programs and Services at Reedley College and the North Centers (Willow International, Madera, & Oakhurst) List services and accommodations DSP&S provides. Explain the process of applying for DSP&S services and accommodations.

DSP&S Mission Statement The mission of Disabled Students Programs and Services is to offer services to students with physical, learning and psychological disabilities beyond those provided by conventional Reedley College programs, thus “aiding” students to successfully pursue their individual educational, vocational and personal goals. DSP&S provides programs and services for students with disabilities in compliance with disability laws such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Student participation in the program is voluntary and all information is confidential.

Programs, Services, & Accommodations Disabled Students Programs & Services offers students: Special Programs: Transition to College, Workability III, and TRIO Student Support Services. Special Classes: Developmental Service (DEVSER) courses are designed to improve general knowledge and assist students gain the skills necessary to successfully complete degree applicable courses. Reasonable Accommodations: Provide access to education without changing the fundamental elements of the course. Accommodations may include extended testing time, mobility assistance, notetaking assistance, etc. Accommodations will be determined by the documented disability, academic limitations, and discussion between the student and the DSP&S counselor. Student Responsibilities All students receiving services from Disabled Students Programs and Services are held responsible for complying with the State Center Community College District Student Code of Conduct, DSP&S policies and procedures, and other campus regulations as listed in the Reedley College Catalog.

Applying for DSP&S Services Submit and complete a Reedley College application. (www.reedleycollege.edu) Call (559) 638-0332 and schedule a New Student Intake appointment with DSP&S. Bring verification of your disability to your scheduled intake appointment. Complete intake process. Take the placement test (if applicable) Accommodations can be requested during intake appointment.

Determining Eligibility Determining the eligibility for services will assist the school to provide the student with appropriate services and reasonable accommodations. There are nine disability categories eligible for DSP&S services within the California Community College System. In order to determine eligibility for services and accommodations, the DSP&S department may need additional documentation to be submitted. In addition to documentation, each semester the student must meet with his or her DSP&S counselor to request appropriate services and sign a new Student Education Plan.

Submitting Required Documentation Students may be requested to submit additional documentation that will assist in clarifying the services that are most appropriate to their specific disabilities. Documentations may be submitted directly to Reedley College, Disabled Students Programs and Services Department. Verification forms are also available as printable files (PDF) on the DSP&S website. DSP&S Eligibility Categories There are nine disability categories eligible for DSP&S services within the California Community College System. It is important that you identify which category best describes your disability, and also determine the appropriate professional who can provide you with the required verification. Acquired Brain Impairment Deaf and Hard of Hearing Psychological Disability Mobility Disability Speech and Language Visual Disability Developmental Delayed Learner Learning Disability “Other” Disability

Learning Disability Assessment When you meet with a counselor during the New Student Intake process, you should request a learning disability assessment if: This is your first LD referral with no history of verified LD Your previous LD testing was done prior to age eighteen; or You were tested more than three years ago.

DSP&S Online Orientation Review Students must complete the following steps to be eligible for Reedley College DSP&S Services: Submit and complete a Reedley College application. (www.reedleycollege.edu) Call (559) 638-0332 and schedule a New Student Intake appointment with DSP&S. Complete the DSP&S on-Line Orientation Meet with a DSP&S counselor, provide verification of disability and the DSP&S On-Line Orientation Certificate, and complete the intake process. Take the placement test (if applicable). Accommodations cam be requested during intake appointment.
