Agenda To Get: To Do: Handout from back shelf Illustrated Dictionary from last class To Do: Opener Pictoword: Exploration Explores Mapping Routes Exit Slip

Today in history…10/12/1492

Opener Activity: Pictoword – 15 minutes color is REQUIRED! Objective: To create a symbolic representation of words or phrases that show their meaning. You will create a pictoword on your Illustrated Dictionary using Exploration. Below is an example using the Romantic Art Period. Example:

The Three G’s: God, Gold, and Glory As European powers grew, the quest to expand their empire came from three main sources: God Glory Gold

GOD Europeans sent out missionaries to convert the “savages” to Christianity. Cortes: “natives (should be) introduced to the holy Catholic Faith” Converting the “heathen” was a motive for international exploration and domination

GOLD European explorers were interested in finding goods (spices, natural resources, etc.) that they could take back to Europe and sell. Find precious metals. Gold always popular; silver becoming a hot commodity

GLORY European explorers wanted to claim land for their supporting country and then receive a hero’s welcome when they returned from their voyage. Fame: go where no man (European) had gone before

Research: The Explorers Objective: To gain an understanding of the leading explorers from Spain and Portugal Assignment Your table is your group of six, share materials Using the provided handouts; fill in the chart where appropriate Answer the following questions: 1) Summarize life story. 2) Describe voyage of exploration: A) Where did he go? B) Why did he go there? C) What was this individual’s impact on the region? 3) What was this individual’s lasting legacy? Time allotted: 24 minutes (four minutes each slide)
