11 Guided Notes: Historical Overview Transition of power
1200- Middle East was dominated by two powerful empires, the Byzantine in the northwest and the Islamic (Abbasid) caliphate through much of the middle eastern heartland. BY 1258, Mongol conquest of Baghdad had ended Abbasid Caliphate BY 1400, Ottoman Turks invaded and caused great decline in the Byzantine Empire. BY 1453, Constantinople FALLS to the Ottoman Turks and ends the Byzantine Empire. Transition of power Arabs and Chinese still leaders and major influencers, BUT, Western Europe slowly starts to contend with these locations for power… 1400s- Italy, Spain, and Portugal took the lead in Western European outreach (exploration, travel, expansion)

12 The World Economy Silver becomes global currency of the period
Everyone wants it- allows Spain to build massive armies and grand buildings, Japanese mines raise output of silver, Europeans buy Asian goods with silver China and India are largest recipients of silver-begins to replace paper money and merchants require silver even for common purchases

16 COMPASS Fill in chart, in your guided notes, with each slide.
Chinese invention Used the magnetic poles to calculate direction.

17 ASTROLABE Used position of stars to determine latitude
(location in relation to equator)

18 CARAVEL Smaller, faster ships Could maneuver in shallow waters

19 LATEEN SAILS Triangular in shape
Mounted at an angle, easier to maneuver

20 Advances in Shipbuilding
Learned to build ships that sat lower in the water Allowed for stable ships that could carry larger amounts of trade goods.

21 Steering - Rudder Allowed for one person to steer the ship as opposed to multiple people steering from the side with oars.

22 Reading Questions - pg. 95-96
For the Age of Exploration, the Renaissance encouraged a new spirit of ______________________ and _______________________.... which prompted Europeans to ___________________________ the world around them. Before this time period contact of Europeans with the rest of the world was limited to, in 1100, European __________________________ that battled _____________________ and Marco Polo who reached the court of __________________ in China around that time of 1275. What three things/ideas spurred an age of European exploration? What was the MAIN reason for European exploration? What was the main “luxury” item coming from Asia that Europeans were interested in? Name three. What two groups controlled the trade of this region? How? How did Europeans traders seek to bypass these merchants? What were the two sacred duties European Christians felt during this time? Who said, “To serve God and His Majesty, to give light to those who were in darkness and to grow rich as all men desire to do.”? Name and explain the 3 G’s that motivated explorers of this period.

23 The Three G’s: God, Gold, and Glory
As European powers grew, the quest to expand their empire came from three main sources: God Glory Gold

24 GOD Europeans sent out missionaries to convert the “savages” to Christianity. Cortes: “natives (should be) introduced to the holy Catholic Faith” Converting the “heathen” was a motive for international exploration and domination

25 GOLD European explorers were interested in finding goods (spices, natural resources, etc.) that they could take back to Europe and sell. Find precious metals. Gold always popular; silver becoming a hot commodity

26 GLORY European explorers wanted o claim land for their supporting country and then receive a hero’s welcome when they returned from their voyage.
