ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE REVIEW Definition and Overview An active shooter is an individual(s) actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a specific area. Active shooter situations are: Unpredictable and evolve quickly. Often over within 5 minutes. Knowing what to do saves lives

ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE REVIEW Indications an Event is Occurring: You may hear shots fired Notification by Public Address system RAVE Emergency Alert Notification RAVE Building personnel telling you to LOCKDOWN Do not pull the fire alarm Lock down tone

ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE REVIEW Run – Hide – Fight video: Run Hide Fight Video

ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE REVIEW RUN Leave your belongings behind Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow Help others to escape, if possible Do not attempt to move the wounded Do not run in a straight line Prevent others from entering an area where the active shooter may be Keep your hands visible Call 911 when you are safe

ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE REVIEW HIDE Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view Block entry to the hiding place and lock doors, if possible Turn off the lights Silence cell phones Remain quiet

ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE REVIEW FIGHT As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger Attempt to incapacitate the shooter Act with as much physical aggression as possible Improvise weapons or throw items at the active shooter Commit to your actions…your life depends on it Barricade Video

ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE REVIEW When law enforcement arrives: Remain calm and follow officers’ instructions Put down any items in your hands (i.e., bags, jackets, books, etc.) Immediately raise hands and spread fingers Keep hands visible at all times Avoid making quick movements toward officers, such as holding onto them for safety Avoid pointing, screaming and/or yelling Do not stop to ask officers for help or direction when evacuating

ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE REVIEW Once you have reached a safe location, you will likely be restricted to that area until the situation is under control and all witnesses have been identified and questioned. DO NOT leave until law enforcement authorities have instructed you to do so.
