2 Active Shooter Response Overview
Active Shooter incidents occur in office buildings, shopping malls, hotels, hospitals, schools and restaurants. According to the FBI, these incidents are on the rise. The Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the NYPD want you to understand how to survive an active shooter event. Page  2

3 Active Shooter Responses
The key to is to remain calm and quickly determine which response to employ. A-B-C Avoid Barricade Confront

4 Active Shooter Response AVOID (AKA Run, Delay or Get Out)
If there is a safe way out, the best option is to attempt to evacuate the premises Be sure to: Have an escape route and plan in mind Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow Leave your belongings behind Help others escape, if possible Prevent individuals from entering the area Keep your hands visible

5 Active Shooter Response: Barricade (AKA “Hide”, “Hide Out” or “Delay”)
If evacuation is not possible, find a secure place Hunker down where the assailant is less likely to find you Ideally, your hiding place should: Be out of the shooter’s view Provide some protection if shots are fired in your direction (e.g., an office with a closed and locked door) Not trap you or restrict your options for movement. Allow you to quickly barricade the door.

6 Active Shooter Response: Confront AKA “Fight, Fight Out or Disable”
As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, act as a group and attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter by: Throwing items and using improvised weapons Yelling Acting with extreme violence & committing to your actions
