Pre-Algebra Period 1 Wednesday 10-29-08 Chapter 3: Decimals and Equations Lesson Title: Ch 3-5 Solving Equations by Adding or Subtracting Decimals (pgs.142-145) Materials Needed: textbook, workbook, mechanical pencil, paper CA Standards: Number Sense 1.2 Add and Subtract Decimals Objectives: 1.To solve one-step decimal equations involving addition and subtraction. Lesson Background Lecture: slide 2 Connect to Prior Knowledge Lecture: slide 2 Guided Practice: 1. Use the examples to get understand the concepts. 2. “Check Understanding” (pg.144) 1-12 samples Independent Practice: CW: Workbook Ch 3-5 (pg.25) 1-25 Odds (do this on binder paper) HW 1: “Practice and Problem Solving” (pg.144) 13-21 Odds HW 2: “Mixed Review” exercise 37-43 All Assessments: 1.Written Work 2.Teacher Observation

Lesson Background Be sure to line up the decimal points carefully and check your work to catch any mistakes. Although the textbook shows subtraction of decimals on one line (-9.7 – 4.5) Students may find it easier to stack the numbers vertically with the decimals points lined up properly. To solve one-step equations, use inverse operations and the properties of equality to get the variable alone on one side of the equation. Connections - Prior Knowledge and future knowledge. In lesson 2.5, students learned to solve equations by adding or subtracting. In this lesson, they extend this to solving equations with decimals. In lesson 3-6, they will solve equations by multiplying or dividing decimals.
