Expectations of WGSR from EGTEI Richard Ballaman Chairman of the Working Group on Strategies and Review www.unece.org/env/lrtap/

Aims of EGTEI Create a forum for exchange of information on TEI between national experts and industry Describe emission control options, their costs and ranges of uncertainties Collection of in-country data on cost of abatement techniques for ECODAT updates Evaluate data on typical installations submitted by countries and/or JRC Sevilla

Priority sectors adopted by EGTEI in January 2003 Sources covered by EU VOC directive Paint uses Industrial processes causing PM emissions Small boilers in the residential and commercial sectors (PM from wood combust.) Off-road sector Industrial combustion

Status report EGTEI 2005 What has been achieved by EGTEI since the last report ? What remains to be done ? What may be done next year and later ? Links with the project assessment of emerging technologies ? How to associate more national experts and look for synergies with JRC?

Review of POPs protocol Started in 2004 Substances subjected to specific review require-ments in the Protocol Review on efficiency and sufficiency of the obligations in the protocol as to be finished in October 2006 Update of the technical annexes for PCDD and PAH emission sources Consideration of new substances: PBDE and PFOS

Review of HMs protocol Start in 2005 with priority on Cd and Hg; while this would not exclude action on other metals Need to review control options included in the technical annexes (BAT update) Development of an effects-based approach (possibly risk assessment) Review on efficiency and sufficiency of the protocol obligations

Review of the multi-pollutant / multi-effect protocol (Gothenburg) Expected to start in 2006 once entered into force Identify the needs to update and integrate possible new abatement options Review of the guidance documents to take account of new BAT Will consider NH3 in more detail and newly consider PM2.5 and coarse PM
