Introduction I have my degree from the Georgia State in English and Masters in Computer Information Systems as well as a Master in Early Childhood Education from the University of Phoenix I have taught First Grade for 10 years. This is my 11th year at SBCE in First grade. I LOVE what I do and am so happy to be able to share that joy with your child
Assessments 3 types (district, grade level, classroom) District (Renaissance (STAR) Math, Reading, Early Literacy, Math Unit tests) Grade Level (LA quizzes, writing prompts, Cold reads, Science, SS, Health) Classroom (spelling tests, skill checks)
Math 6 different units of study approximately 5-6 weeks long Pre and post tests for each unit 3 levels of instruction- on, advanced and accelerated (STAR, Math mastery, unit pre-tests, teacher recommendation) Placement decisions will be made at the 6 week mark and will be reevaluated in December and at year end Possibility of changing classes for math
Homework A homework sheet will come home every Monday. (Spelling and reading) It is due on Friday. Please sign. Reading for 10-15 minutes EVERY night. If you need to assist your child past understanding the directions, please write a note on the top of the paper. Spelling Choice Suggestions Math homework will come from your child’s math teacher) Mon/wed- reading Tues-math Thursday-math/spelling
Spelling Each child is assessed and placed at the appropriate level. We will have 3 levels in our classroom Each week focuses on a spelling pattern 20 words (the ten current spelling words with 5 review words taken from ANY past spelling test and 5 words from our word wall) First grade website

Grading S -Satisfactory N -Needs Improvement U -Unsatisfactory Report cards every 9 weeks. Progress Skills Checklists 3 times a year. Work Sample Packets approximately twice a month Minimum of 9 grades per subject per semester 80-100, 70-79, 69 and below

Time (remediation, enrichment, assessment, learning) 1:15 – 2:10 Science/ Social Studies / Health 2:10 to 2:20- Prepare for dismissal
Writing We will focus on narrative, informational, and persuasive genres. Writing folder – your first homework assignment Writing Traits- we focus and assess the areas of ideas, organization, word choice, and conventions Each unit has a rubric that grades writing on a scale from a 1 to 4.
Reading Everyone is assessed at the beginning of the year and will work on their own individual BAS reading level. Weekly work on decoding skills as well as comprehension skills Goal is 1 full year’s growth Reading Level Correlation Chart All groups doing very different skills
