Early Childhood/Special Education 2nd Year at NLE in 3rd Grade

3 Attendance Agendas School begins promptly at 7:50 am
Please let me know in advance if your child will be absent for an extended period of time Make-up work will be provided after the student returns to school Adequate time will be given to complete make-up assignments Agendas Assignments written daily Homework will be posted on my website Reading and Math Homework Daily Take home every evening (Monday-Thursday) Please check and sign nightly

Classroom Management Positive Reinforcement– rewarding the ‘good stuff.’ Earn Dojo Points for individual behavior Earn Fuzzies for whole class behavior Setting expectations clearly. Communication with parents is key!

6 Birthdays Please refer to the Student Handbook regarding birthday and party foods and invitations at school Non-food items to celebrate your child’s special day Invitations may be distributed in school if each child receives one Register with PTO for your directory

7 Snack Working snack time in the morning @ 10:00 AM
Please pack 1 healthy small snack Water Bottles (Label with your child’s name) Our classroom is a nut free zone Snack

8 Lunch Lunch time: 11:55-12:25 Our ice cream day will be Wednesday 
Send in a note if you are joining us for lunch– No restaurant food! If you would like a school lunch, your child can make your lunch choice in the morning Check in office before entering Lunch money in baggie with name and number – option to pay online (myschoolbucks.com)

Class Parties Fall Festival Winter Celebration End-Of-The-Year Party {Information about volunteering will be sent out as the dates get closer}

10 Transportation Students are required to go home each day as indicated at the beginning of the year Please send in a note with transportation changes If a change is necessary by , CC: Angela Ferrer to ensure request is received – Before NOON

12 Curriculum Nine Week Plans Differentiated Instruction
Math: flexible grouping according to student needs with common unit assessments across grade level Readers and Writers workshop Love of reading has increased! Teachers will receive more training on it this year Science & Social Studies Rotating Units (Scientific Method, Explorers, Animal Adaptations…)

Shared Reading Learning skills to be a better reader Read Aloud Go along with reading units Reading Workshop Mini Lesson, Independent Reading (Conferencing), Strategy/Reading Groups, Share Time Writing Workshop Mini Lesson, Independent Writing (Conferencing), Strategy/Reading Groups, Share Time Word Study NO HOMEWORK – just study! (suggested practice on website) Word Study Words will be sent home

14 Sign up for Fall conferences on Phoenix!
For the school year, all teachers will continue to use Phoenix Grade Book to enter student grades. Parents and students will also still have access to  ParentVUE and StudentVUE. Parents and students will have near real-time access to information on assignments and grades, attendance, class schedules, graduation status and more. ParentVUE offers a single sign-on to view school information for all siblings, regardless of the grade level or school of attendance. Sign up for Fall conferences on Phoenix!

15 Grading Grading will be 1, 2, 3, 4 (with pluses)
No percentages will be given on tests - (4 point scale) No letter grade assigned. (Report cards will still have a letter assigned.) Differentiates mastery of a skill and going ‘above & beyond’ (application) Grades will be updated in a timely manner (Phoenix) Thursday Folders –Completed/Graded Work

16 Newton-Lee is a BYOT school Initially, will not be everyday

17 Testing Math and Reading SOL TESTING– 2 day testing (2 days for each test) Science and Social Studies Performance Task Assessments Benchmark Testing MAP Testing (math and reading only) Fall, winter, spring Results are used for strategy work & instructional purposes Adaptive to students’ responses
