Microsoft Publisher 2010 Lesson 2 Creating Publications

Learning Objectives: Plan a publication Design a publication On completion of this lesson, students will be able to: Plan a publication Design a publication Create various publications from a template Add Building Blocks to a Publication Work with objects

3 Phases of Creating a Publication Plan Design Create

Planning for a Publication Determine the PURPOSE of the publication. Determine the desired RESPONSE. Do you want to inform only or do you want readers to take an action (attend, send money, volunteer, etc.)? Determine the TARGET AUDIENCE so that you can design an appropriate publication. Gather INFORMATION to include. The depth of information will be determined by the target audience and the type of response expected.

Designing the Publication The design should support the goal of the publication. The design must take into account the whole publication and be able to convey the message without confusion. Type, size, and style of the font should directly relate to the message. Avoid using too many font types. Graphics, used correctly, add interest. Avoid overuse. White space (negative space) is used between elements to rest the eye and make objects stand out.

Designing the Publication Emphasize important features using size, color, location, and rotation. Text can be emphasized by placing it in the heading or sidebar. Follow the Six Principles of Design (see separate PowerPoint for explanations): Alignment Proximity/Unity Balance Repetition/Consistency Contrast White Space

Create Various Publications from a Template Publisher offers a wide selection of publication categories.

Create Various Publications from a Template Templates can be used as a starting point for a publication to save time, enhance creativity, and reduce costs. Professionally created publications can be very expensive. But you can create professional looking publications yourself by customizing the available templates.

Create Various Publications from a Template Page Navigation Pane When working with multiple page templates, the page navigation pane may be used to view the template in its entirety.

Create Various Publications from a Template Delete any unwanted template parts. The page design may be altered using the Page Design Ribbon Change the color scheme using the Page Design Tab, Schemes Group, Color Schemes gallery Change the page margins or page orientation using the Page Design Tab, Page Setup Group

Adding Building Blocks to a Publication Building blocks are built-in design objects that may be inserted into a publication quickly. Building blocks include ads, calendars, coupon, logos, sidebars, borders, pull quotes and much more. The Building Blocks group is on the Insert Tab

Working With Objects Objects are elements that are inserted into a publication and may be resized, moved, joined, or layered. Examples are: clip art, tables, text boxes, building blocks, shapes, and pictures.

Working With Objects Objects may be grouped with other objects to create a single object. Grouping enables the designer to move multiple objects at once. (The Group and Ungroup commands are in the Arrange group on the Home, Drawing Tools Format, and Picture Tools Format tabs) You can select multiple objects at once using the Ctrl key and clicking on the individual objects. Grouped objects may be ungrouped to revert back to multiple objects.

Working With Objects The Bring Forward and Send Backward Commands in the Arrange Group may be used to layer objects as desired.
