9 Layout Tools RULERS The rulers located on the left and top of the publication help line up text, images, and other objects. When an object is selected, a white space will appear on the rulers to show the object’s location.

10 Layout Tools PAGE NAVIGATION The page navigation is a pane to the left that displays an image of each page in the publication. BOUNDARIES Boundaries are dark blue dashed borders that appear around objects. Viewing object boundaries can be useful to align objects or view text.

11 Layout Tools MARGIN GUIDES Margin guides are blue lines that mark the
edges, or margins, of a printable area; they are automatically created when page margins are set. SCRATCH AREA The scratch area is the grey area outside the white page area. It shows objects or portions of objects located outside page boundaries; anything in the scratch area will not print. You can think of it as a holding space while you decide what to place and how to place it in your publication.

12 Editing Pages in Page Navigation
By right clicking on the various pages located in the Page Navigation pane, you can do things such as: Insert a new blank page Insert a duplicate (copy) of a page Delete a page Move a page (reorder pages) Rename pages (helps with organization)

13 Using the Home Tab The Home tab will contain many of your basic commands This includes all commands within the Font and Paragraph groups You may also insert pictures tables and shapes from the Home tab

14 Using the Insert Tab There are many cool and useful tools to use under the Insert Tab In addition to inserting things such as images and shapes, you can also insert additional pages, word art, calendars, tables, etc. Perhaps the coolest tools available are located within the Illustrations group. This group allows you to insert things such as:

19 Using the Page Design Tab
Just as in Word and PowerPoint, we can use our Page Design tab to edit the background of our Publisher pages. Additionally, there are several other useful tools within this tab. These tools include:

20 Page Design Tab - Orientation
Depending on what you are designing, you may need to change the orientation of your paper. This means that you are rotation the way the paper is positioned.

21 Page Design Tab – Page Size
You may also want to change the size of the paper so that it is the correct size for what you’re designing.

22 Page Design Tab – Guides
Page Guides can also be very helpful. They can assist you to ensure that various elements on the page are lined up, space your page elements evenly, or even divide your page into collumns.

23 Format Tab When working with and inserting various elements onto the page such as shapes, images, textboxes, etc., do not forget to utilize the FORMAT tab! There are lots of useful tools here and it can really help you make your projects appealing!

When inserting multiple elements onto a page, you may notice that they begin to overlap one another.

To rearrange the elements of this page, we would use the “Bring Forward” and “Bring Backwards” commands found in the FORMAT tab.

27 Using Templates Rather than designing from scratch, you may also consider using templates within Microsoft Publisher. Publisher has templates for anything from brochures to party invitations to food menus.
