It is published in German, English and French. 2-3 October 2008 Regional and Urban Statistics Working Party Meeting

Regional and Urban Statistics New in the 2008 edition: Data coverage from the 27 EU Member states as well as the candidate and EFTA-countries (whenever regional data is available). We have two new chapters in this edition: Sectoral productivity and Labour costs, and the chapter on Health is reappearing again . Revised colour scheme of the statistical maps, to be in line with the new graphical design. 2-3 October 2008 Regional and Urban Statistics Working Party Meeting

Using the NUTS 2006/EU-27 classification The 2008 edition is using the revised NUTS classification that entered into force on the 1 January 2008. You can find the revised list of all NUTS regions in this publication called “Regions in the European Union”. 2-3 October 2008 Regional and Urban Statistics Working Party Meeting

The candidate and EFTA countries… For the candidate and EFTA countries the regions are called “Statistical regions” and follow the same principal rules as the NUTS regions. When available, regional data from these countries are also shown in the Eurostat regional yearbook. 2-3 October 2008 Regional and Urban Statistics Working Party Meeting

Three examples from the 2008 edition: Chapter 7: Sectorial productivity Author: Zuzana Gáková in DG Regional Policy Chapter 8: Labour costs Author: Simone Casali in the Labour market unit, Eurostat Chapter 13: Agriculture Author: Garry Mahon in the Agriculture unit, Eurostat 2-3 October 2008 Regional and Urban Statistics Working Party Meeting

Chapter 7: Sectoral productivity The chapter gives us a detailed analysis of the regional differences in productivity (GVA per person employed) in a number of business sectors. The text concentrates on the financial intermediation and business sector (NACE J and K) as well as the industry sector (NACE C to E). 2-3 October 2008 Regional and Urban Statistics Working Party Meeting

Regional and Urban Statistics Chapter 8: Labour costs The chapter on Labour costs examine “Hourly labour costs” and “Average hours actually worked” (as in this map), but exceptionally by NUTS 1 regions since Eurostat don’t have more detailed regional data for this subject. We are happy to introduce a new interesting labour market indicator in our publication. 2-3 October 2008 Regional and Urban Statistics Working Party Meeting

Regional and Urban Statistics Chapter 13: Agriculture This year’s chapter on Agriculture focus on livestock statistics in terms of major types of farm animals (especially pigs, sheep and cows) in the European regions and with specific attention to the dairy industry.
