1 Eurostat regional yearbook 2015
Åsa Önnerfors Eurostat

2 The 2015 edition of the Regional yearbook was published on the 9th of October.
The online version was released in Statistics Explained on the 5th of August. Stockholm is on the cover this time (it was Matera in Italy last year).

3 Same facts about the publication
Print run, paper copies: per year Download figures, PDF version: per year ( per year for individual chapters) Page views, online version in Statistics Explained: per year (all chapters/ articles)

4 Each chapter contain Information on policy context
Analysis of main statistical findings Background information on statistical concepts, data sources etc. Maps, tables, graphs Spotlight on the regions Don't forget that short definitions of statistical concepts also can be found in the "Glossary" of Statistics Explained.

5 Table of content Research and innovation
Regional policies and Europe 2020 Population Health Education Labour market Economy Structural business statistics Research and innovation Information society Tourism Transport Agriculture Focus on gender statistics Focus on quality of life Focus on European cities The introduction chapter has been divided and a new chapter on policy indicators has been added. The Population chapter has been entirely rewritten and is based on results from Census 2011 (most maps are on NUTS level 3). Improved timeliness with one reference year for Labour market and LFS based Education indicators (2014) and for Economy (2013). New dataset on Enterprise demography presented in the Structural business statistics chapter.

6 New chapters this year

7 Regional policies and Europe 2020
Strengthen the connection to the Europe 2020 publication. The first chapter explains the overall policy context, analysing development over time (the last 5 years) in graphs and distribution plots. Contains double distribution plots to show change between two reference years (2008 and 20014), to measure any improvements for the main Europe 2020 indicators for which we have regional datasets.

8 Employment rate and change rate 2009 - 2014
The graphs measuring the Europe 2020 indicators are to be found in chapter 1, but the statistical maps are sorted in the subject chapters, where we have "twin maps" for all Europe 2020 indicators; one "normal" gradient scale map with the indicator itself and one change rate map with diverging colours from red (negative values) to green (positive values) to show change over time.

9 Gender statistics The distribution plot shows the gender gap in life expectancy at birth for men and women. The pattern in this graph is very clear; women live longer than men in all regions, but there are large national differences. Women in Spain live on average almost 20 years longer than men in Lithuania. The chapter on Gender statistics is a experimental chapter, where we analyse a cross cutting issue. For most social statistics we have a gender breakdown by men and women, but this data is not analysed very often, especially not at a regional level. We have in this chapter chosen to concentrate on calculations of the gender gap, but ranked by the national average; so the difference between male and female values. The gender pay gap is perhaps the most well-known indicator, but also other topics have been included in this chapter like: life expectancy (the graph displayed here), health indicators, early school leavers, tertiary education level, activity rate, part-time employment rate, average hours worked and of course the gender pay gap (NUTS 1 regions). The plan is to integrate maps and graphs on gender statistics also in coming editions, but then sorted under each topic. The goal is to make gender statistics "main stream", it should not be something out of the ordinary!

10 Life expectancy at birth
Gender gap Life expectancy at birth Activity rate Part-time employment An example on how we have used red and blue colour shades to represent female/male "advantage"; the colour show which gender gap that is dominating: female or male and the intensity of the colour (the colour shades) show how wide the gender gap is in each region. The third map here on part-time employment rate show a mixed pattern, in a few regions more men than women work part-time (Portugal, Romania, Greece and Turkey).

11 Quality of life Quality of life is a broad concept covering both objective factors and subjective perception. The chapter is based on EU-SILC data analysed by Degree of urbanisation: Cities Towns and suburbs Rural areas Chapter 14 is dedicated to "Quality of life" indicators by Degree of urbanisation and for this chapter we collaborated with colleagues in the EU-SILC unit. A flagship publication on Quality of life was published on the 1st of June this year and was very much talked of in media, especially "Overall life satisfaction" indicators.

12 Statistical Atlas The Statistical Atlas is an interactive map viewer which contains the same maps as in the Regional yearbook. It's based on static data in contrast to Regional Statistics Illustrated, which is based on live data feed. The Statistical Atlas has migrated to a new technical platform (Leaflet) and now contains also a lot of interesting background maps (the new population grid from Census 2011 for example) and also a special folder with all the territorial typologies and borders and labels for all NUTS levels (which can be combined with any statistical map). A very useful tool for exploring statistical maps in detail!

13 Children and youth A special flagship publication about children and youth was published in mid-April. Especially the first chapter is analysing regional patterns. The publication is mainly concentrating on social indicators for children (0-14 years) and young people (15-29) and the table of content contain the following chapters: Demographic trends Children and young people in family and society Health Education Labour market Living conditions Children and young people in the digital world

14 New infographics on Quality of life and Young Europeans
Eurostat has been very active in producing new infographics in the last year and here are two infographics: Quality of life: comparing the ranking of your own country in an European perspective. Young Europeans uses an "avatar" where the user answer a couple of questions: male/female, age group, nationality and then statistical facts are presented in comparison to your own situation. This is an attempt to reach new user groups and to make statistics a bit more fun and relevant!

15 Thank you for your attention!
