Notebook Notes Directions: In your document, write the following information in this order on the LEFT SIDE. (Your Name) Mr. Swisher Earth and Space Science _____ (Period) 8/24/2016

Notebook Notes Directions: In your document, write the following information in this order in the CENTER in BOLD. 2.2 The Earth’s Spheres

The Earth is a System Scientists used to study the Earth only through its 4 separate branches. They did not see how these branches connected. The Earth is actually a system of parts that work together to make it function. In a system, matter and energy are transferred. Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space Energy: The ability to do work (forms: heat, light, vibrations, waves)

The Earth is a System

Types of Systems Open System: A system in which both matter and energy are exchanged with the surroundings Closed System: A system in which energy, but not matter, is exchanged with the surroundings The Earth is made up of open systems, but the Earth itself is a closed system.

The Earth is a System

The Earth’s Spheres The Earth’s 4 spheres store all of the matter in the Earth and allow it to be transferred. Atmosphere: Matter in the gaseous form (air) Hydrosphere: Matter in the liquid form (water) Geosphere: Matter in the solid form (rock, soil) Biosphere: Living (organic) matter Once matter in this sphere dies, it goes to the other spheres.

Practice Time Directions: Using your device and the worksheet provided, go to the website listed. Then, complete the webquest (read through the slides on the site) and answer the questions on the worksheet. When you finish, complete the vocabulary review on the back. Due: Thursday, August 25
