3 Announcements Homework Check: Lab Review/Turn in
Mineral Lab #2 (from 9/15) Make-Up Days: Test over Rocks and Minerals on 9/29! That is next week on Thursday! Expect one lab this week and one next week with LOTS OF NOTES…but NO COMPLAINING!

4 Earth and Space Science
Unit 2: Minerals and Rocks Daily Objective: I can describe the properties of igneous rocks and their uses.

5 Notebook Notes Directions: In your document, write the following information in this order on the LEFT SIDE. (Your Name) Mr. Swisher Earth and Space Science _____ (Period) 9/21/2016

6 Notebook Notes Directions: In your document, write the following information in this order in the CENTER in BOLD. 6.2: Igneous Rocks

7 Igneous Rocks When magma cools and hardens, it forms igneous rocks.
Magma is molten rock found inside and near volcanoes! It forms from rocks that get so hot that they melt.

8 Types of Igneous Rocks Intrusive: Formed from magma that cools deep below the Earth’s crust Inner/lower layers Extrusive: Formed from magma that cools on the Earth’s surface Outer/upper layers

9 Types of Igneous Rocks

10 Intrusive Igneous Rocks
Intrusive Igneous Rocks are made of large crystals. Because the magma cools slowly and allows large crystals to form Very dense Crystals have a coarse-grained texture Examples: Granite

11 Granite The large crystals make this granite shine when polished so it looked naturally beautiful!

12 Intrusive Igneous Rocks
Igneous rock masses that form underground are called intrusions. Think: What is an intruder?

13 Extrusive Igneous Rocks
Extrusive Igneous Rocks are made of small crystals. Because the magma cools too quickly for large crystals to form Less dense, filled with more air bubbles Crystals have a fine-grained texture Example: Obsidian, Basalt, Pumice

14 Pumice Lots of Air Bubbles You can use this to scrub your body!

15 Extrusive Igneous Rocks
Igneous rock masses that form on the Earth’s surface are called extrusions. Also called “lava flows” or “lava plateaus”

16 Worksheet Time Directions: Using your notes from today, complete the Igneous Rock worksheet (Page 1) by filling out each box of the chart AND answering the questions.
