Minimizing Heating & Cooling Costs Feel free to share and distribute this content whether you give us credit or not. Craft beer is also appreciated.

Heating & Cooling Costs in Commercial Buildings U.S. DOE: 40% of energy costs spent on HVAC = 7.5% of total costs for average office building

Commercial Buildings’ Saving Potential U.S. DOE: U.S. commercial building owners can save between 22% and 56% on heating and cooling with smart, energy efficient HVAC control system.

Smart HVAC & Time-of-Use Utility Rates Many utilities charge higher electricity rates during peak-demand hours (typically afternoon & evening) Remedies: Shift some energy use to partial- or off-peak hours. Energy efficient lighting and controls. Minimize heating and cooling leaks. Take advantage of utility demand-response program to receive discounts from reducing peak-demand energy loads. Smart HVAC & building automation controls enable all remedies in one solution.

Optimize HVAC Fan Speed for Energy Savings Many HVAC systems’ supply fans run constantly to maintain ventilation airflow. Energy necessary for fan motors rises exponentially with speed: energy = fan speed3 Optimizing and balancing airflow between all zones can significantly reduce HVAC system energy use.

More Heating & Cooling Inefficiencies of RTUs Ineffective Outside Air Intake Economizer (“actuator” depicted below) stuck in open position due to enthalpy sensor failure (a frequent occurrence), constantly brings outside air into the building regardless of temperature or quality. Heating or cooling outside air 50 to 100 degrees in winter or summer requires tremendous energy, which isn’t necessary when outside air intake is optimized.
