Information Name: Jay Maisel Birthdate: January 18, 1931 Birth place: Brooklyn, New York Not dead, he is 84 years old Mediums used: digital and film Favorite subject: Everyday life, street photography Route: Studied painting and graphic design at Cooper Union and Yale. Began his career in 1954 and captured portraits, such as, Marilyn Monroe and Miles Davis. He shot annual reports, magazine covers, jazz albums, advertising and more. Techniques: Never shot in black and white, light, color, gesture, dye transfer prints Best work: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, Groundskeeper, don’t walk and red Impact on society: It showed the everyday life of what people were doing. He was the only one shooting natural light color photographs. He doesn’t use any image manipulation and his images and style has inspired many photographers.

Reflection I chose Jay Maisel because his work shows a lot of emotion. When he uses people as his subject, it makes you wonder what they are thinking about and what they are feeling. I like his technique and style because it’s very clear and there are vibrant details in his photographs. I love how he captures the moment of something. He captures what someone is doing and it’s not posed, it’s natural.
