1 Creative Photo Conceptual Self Portraits
You will be learning to express yourself creatively through photographs with this project! All pictures will be shot in black in white and vertical format There are 2 parts to this project: PART 1: Pictoral words; Spelling out words by shooting photos where letters are found in nature These words must describe something about YOU Choose 3 words, between 5-7 letters each

2 Descriptive Word Project
Pictoral words; Spelling out a word by shooting photos where letters are found in nature and architecture This word must describe something about YOU Must be 6-7 letters long

3 Can you recognize where these pictures came from?
You will be taking pictures of locations on campus where letters can be formed. Can you recognize where these pictures came from?

4 Learn to look closely at the architecture, ground, and other items that surround you….

5 Look at all the different ways you can find the letter “A” around different environments…..

6

7 Step 1: Think of a word that describe you, your life, or something you can relate to. The word must be between 6 and 7 letters long For example: for me, I would use the word LAUGH because I love to make people laugh.

8 The word SLEEP also describes something about me….I LOVE TO SLEEP!
Notice that both letter “E”s are two different images.

9 DANCE…something I don’t do well, but I love to do it anyways!
Notice that the “N” and “E” are actual letters found on the walls. You are allowed to use 1 real letter in the word ( Must be an artistic one, so choose carefully!!), the other letters must be created by using your imagination around campus.

10 You will have 2 days of shooting and uploading
You will have 2 days of shooting and uploading. We will be converting these photos into BW, so you will be adjusting the brightness and contrast while editing. I will show you an example of how to upload them at a later date. Your goal is to find 3-4 letters a day, saving time to editing and uploading. All pictures must be taken in vertical format in 2 views: One view with your ID in the shot next to the letter , and one zoomed in with only the letter (remember to shoot vertical only!). This assures me that you took the picture and you didn’t find it online. Here are some great examples from last year….. Show Bears, Jesses, Mayas and other websites from last year.

11 Self Portrait Project Part 2:
You will team up with a team of 3 people to help you shoot a portrait of YOU that personifies the word you shot in picture form. The top 3 portraits and that word will be mounted together. You must shoot 3 portraits from the waist up, or neck up. The other two poses can be full bodied. You will blog all 5 poses, however only your favorite 3 will be printed in 8x10. You must include at least 1 prop in each photo and interact with it You can wear a costume or make up as long as you face is recognizable Photo will be shot in Black and white, can be vertical or horizontal format Dramatic lighting must be used!! Choose your location carefully; background is part of your composition. Your face must ALWAYS be visible, either full frontal, ¾ angle or profile.

12 Dramatic lighting adds emotion Photoshop can be used if you know how to use it. Remember you need a prop!!!

What's your creative process like? How do you come up with such amazing ideas? I conceive photography like painting. The camera is just one of the tools. Photoshop allows me to create my images. So the first and main part of the process is not taking a picture but finding an idea... the idea always comes first and then I seek the best way to achieve it, and I know exactly what I want to get before shooting. My inspiration is the human being. Its absurdity, its irrationality, its pettiness in everyday life. Inspiration can come therefore from politics or religion, life and death, as well as food, television and all our daily behaviors. I generally try to make images that offer several levels of reading. We first see something and a detail gives another interpretation ...and multiple interpretations are possible according to the beholder... And I also try to make people smile!

14 Some famous self portraits of artists from the past….

15 Famous Self Portraits

16 Here is more of what I expect from you….
Both of these students chose to hold paint brushes and add paint to them to help express something about themselves…..

17 Consider lighting…..

18 Consider space , both positive and negative…….

19 You will create a new project folder titled “ self - Portraits”
You must take 5 different shots, each one showing either a different angle (from above, from below, profile, straight-on, ¾ view) or altered lighting (direct lighting or dramatic lighting from a side). You will create a new project folder titled “ self - Portraits” You must load all 5 pictures, each labeled 1-5 in order of favorite (your favorite of all 5 you will lable “1”) All Due on flash drive and uploaded on blog by Friday, Feb, 12th
