Born in: Waterbury, Connecticut, USA Famous for: Portrait photography Nationality: American Religion: Jewish Education: Northwood High School, San Francisco Art Institute

3 Early Life Third youngest of six children
Took her first pictures in the Philippines while her father was stationed in the area during the Vietnam War Leibovitz found interest in writing and playing music during her high school years Then found her love of painting when attending the San Francisco Art Institute While developing her photography skills, she was also working multiple jobs, such as a kibbutz volunteer (working in a farm and with agriculture)

4 Career Rolling Stone: Vanity Fair:
In 1970, she started her career as staff photographer for the Rolling Stone magazine Became chief photographer in 1973 Left in 1983 to pursue other opportunities Vanity Fair: After leaving Rolling Stone, she worked for the Vanity Fair magazine to help broaden her reputation To this day, she still continues to capture portraits of celebrities and is now working with Vogue and other advertising agencies

5 Personal Life Has three children
Gave birth to her eldest daughter at age 51 At age 56, she had her twin daughters, who were born from a surrogate mother (a woman who bears a child on behalf of another) Was never married Had a close and intimate relationship with Susan Sontag (a writer) They were in a 15-year relationship until Sontag’s death in 2004

Subject Matter: Famous Celebrities Bright coloured photographs with intense lighting and unique poses Projects pop culture in her photographs Her early works were only featured in black and white, until 1974 when Rolling Stone began printing in colour Found inspiration from photographers, such as Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson Her work combines culture, society, and entertainment She also includes unusual elements in her photos and captures the emotions from her models

7 Issue 335: John Lennon & Yoko Ono
During her career in Rolling Stone, she was given an opportunity to photograph John Lennon for a magazine cover On December 8, 1980, she had a photo shoot with the musician The initial plan was to get a picture of just Lennon by himself, but insisted that his wife accompany him Five hours after the photo shoot, John Lennon was shot and killed Issue 335: John Lennon & Yoko Ono 1981 The photograph was recreated in by their son Sean Lennon and his girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl with their roles reversed
