Remember the Definition? Juxtaposition is putting two things (such as characters or ideas) side by side on purpose to see how they compare and contrast.

Re-read chapter 13. The author juxtaposes Salva in two roles. Which two roles does she juxtapose? How does this juxtaposition help you compare Salva as a boy with Salva as an adult? What does this comparison suggest about what allowed him to survive? In other words, how are both roles similar, and what do these roles show about who Salva is as a person? How does having Nya as a character make it possible for Park to compare Salva as a boy and an adult? How does Nya compare to the traits you identified in #2? Why does Park use two characters to convey her messages about survival in Sudan, and not just one?
