1 Character Foil NOTES A secondary character whose situation, actions, or traits contrast those of a primary character, and thus by contrast, sets off or foils the major character. Most often (but not always), the foil character makes the main character look better by comparison. Sometimes, foil characters may share a few similar traits, but overall, they are usually opposites.

2 How to write a foil comparison:
The secondary character, __(name #1)__, is a foil for the main character, __(name #2)_____, because __(name #1)____ makes __(name #2)___ appear to be __(traits)________ because ______________________________.

3 Foil Characters We see “foils” of our favorite characters all the time in TV and films. They often emphasize or magnify the traits or qualities of each other. Much like these two here:
