Presentation transcript:

Sedimentary Rock The rocks that form the Earth’s surface are broken down and washed away by mechanical and chemical weathering and erosion. But rocks are formed when the sediment is eventually deposited (deposition) and then squeezed (compacted) and cemented together (cementation). These rocks are called Sedimentary Rock.

Sedimentary Rock This deposition, compaction and cementation is called lithification.

Sedimentary Rock From Latin“ sedimentare” - settling

SEDIMENT SEDIMENTARY Uplift MAGMA Erosion Weathering Transport Deposition SEDIMENTARY Crystallization Uplift MAGMA

Sedimentary Rock Strata – layers of sedimentary rock whose composition is quite similar throughout Stratification – process in which sedimentary rock are arranged in layers

Types of Sedimentary Rock Clastic – formed from fragments of other rocks Nonclastic – formed by chemical or organic means sandstone limestone

Sedimentary Rock Clastic weathered rock and rock fragments Large grained conglomerate Small grained sandstone Clastic weathered rock and rock fragments Can have large grains of previous rock material within the new rock
