1 Ch4 Sec3 Sedimentary Rocks

2 Key Concepts How do sedimentary rocks form?
What are the three major types of sedimentary rocks? How are sedimentary rocks used?

3 Key Terms Sediment Erosion Deposition Compaction Cementation
Clastic rock Organic rock Chemical rock

4 Ch4 Sec3 From Sediment to Rock
Sediment: is small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things Most sedimentary rocks are formed through a series of processes: erosion, deposition, compaction, and cementation

5 Ch4 Sec3 Erosion: running water, wind, or ice loosen and carry away fragments of rock Deposition: is the process by which sediment settles our of the water or wind carrying it Compaction: the process that presses sediments together Cementation: is the process in which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together

6 Ch4 Sec3 Types of Sedimentary Rock
There are three major groups of sedimentary rocks Clastic: is a sedimentary rock that forms when rock fragments are squeezed together Organic rock: forms where the remains of plants and animals are deposited in thick layers Chemical rock: when minerals that are dissolved in a solution crystallize

7 Ch4 Sec3 Uses of Sedimentary Rocks
People have used sedimentary rocks throughout history for many different purposes including: building materials and tools
