Wednesday, April 20, 2016 Objective: Students will be able to evaluate the process of electing the President. Notes/Discussion over electoral college Reading over popular vote proposal (with questions)

General Election Campaigns Many fundraisers are held so the campaigns can pay for advertisement and outreach Candidates tend to focus on “swing states” more than other states since these states are extremely close in the polls Debates are held to inform voters and to give voters impressions of how the candidates are

The Electoral College This is the group of people that officially chooses the President and Vice President Members cast their votes based on which candidate won the most votes in their state Exceptions: Maine and Nebraska If no candidate wins at least 270 votes, the House selects the President

Issues With the Electoral College the winner of the popular vote is not guaranteed the presidency (example: 2000) electors are not required to vote in accord with the popular vote any election might have to be decided in the House of Representatives
