Carnegie Engaged Campus Initiative

Purpose of Today’s Visit Share our campus definition of community engagement Explain why we are applying for the Carnegie Classification Describe the timeline for our work Answer your questions

What is the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification? Prestigious classification that demonstrates an institution’s commitment to partnering with the community. Requires documentation of an institution’s activities, policies, culture, and commitments.

What Does Carnegie Mean by Community Engagement? Collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.

IU South Bend’s Definition of Community Engagement Community engagement at Indiana University South Bend connects our campus with the larger world in which we live through collaborative learning, research, and service.

What’s Important About Community Engagement? Enhances learning through high-impact practices Improves retention and graduation Supports our Strategic Plan: “We will be a diverse, caring, and student-centered campus with a culture that inspires community engagement, good citizenship, and effective leadership.”

Timeline Application is due in April 2019 Data is based on this academic year (2017-2018) The information you put on your DMAI (annual report) will be critical. Check the “civic engagement” box next to entries that involve community engagement. You can check this box for research, teaching, or service.
