Ash Creek Intermediate School: A High Performance School Following is a picture tour of Ash Creek Intermediate School in Monmouth, Oregon. Ash Creek, which opened in September 2002, is a high performance school.

Exterior View of Ash Creek from the south. This photo shows the exterior light shelves that shade the lower windows and therefore reduce/eliminate overheating in the classrooms.

The entrance to Ash Creek faces east. The clerestories for the hall can be easily seen in this picture. Entrance

Exterior View of the Gym The high windows provide daylighting in the gym.

This is the east side of the building. Light shelves can block solar gains on sunny days, as well as reflect more light into the classroom. East Side of the Building

Interior of the School Clerestories in the hallway provide lots of natural daylighting with uniform light levels within the hall. In addition, the hall feels very light and airy. T5s are in the indirect light fixtures (which are not on in the photo).

Clerestories in the north hallway provide lots of natural daylighting. The white fabric (top left side of photo) reflects light into the classrooms through the interior windows. T5s are in the indirect light fixtures (which are not on in the photo). North Hallway

A low-profile hydronic radiator provides heat in this entryway. Low Profile

This picture illustrates how the daylight is bounced off the light shelve into the room. Classroom Daylighting

View from within the same classroom. Daylighting comes into this classroom from the light tube, the exterior side windows (seem reflected in the TV), and the interior windows (the hall has clerestories that bring in natural light). Classroom Daylighting

View from within the same classroom. This picture illustrates how the daylight from the exterior, the interior hall and the light tubes illuminate the classroom. View from within the same classroom. This picture illustrates how the daylight from the exterior, the interior hall and the light tubes illuminate the classroom.

View is looking from within the classroom into the hall. The daylighting from the hall provides an inviting atmosphere. Besides the daylight from the light shelves and the hallway, the light tube (circle of light above clock) in the classroom provides additional light. T5s are in the indirect light fixtures. Classroom

A low-profile hydronic radiator (under the window) provides heat in this classroom without taking up space and without being an eyesore. Low-Profile Heater

The clerestory and the spun fiberglass skylight provide lots of daylight in the media center. Media Center

Daylight from the hallway/clerestories passes through the interior windows into the cafeteria/multipurpose room. Cafeteria/Multi-Purpose Room

The vents near the gym ceiling are used for natural ventilation. The classrooms also have natural ventilation with a mechanical system for extreme conditions. Natural Ventilation

Mechanical Room Three 97 percent efficient boilers provide the heat for the entire school.
