2. Principles of Design

3. Scale
This shows a large scale kitchen in comparison to the smaller scale furniture that is placed inside of it. By looking at this picture one can tell the relative size of the kitchen and could assume larger objects could fill up the empty space. With the scaling of the room it gives it an open feeling.

4. Proportion
The wall art is a good proportion to the amount of furniture that is in the room. It is also proportionate to the size of the furniture which gives the room a heavier feel. It would feel off if the wall art was big but all of the furniture was very small in comparison. This also shows good balance in the room.

5. Balance - Symmetrical
The room pictured shows a beautiful symmetry throughout the whole space. It seems to all be centered around the wall with the fireplace and the couches, wall decorations, tables, and chairs all make it very symmetrical to the eye. This space is very evenly designed in all aspects.

6. Balance - Asymmetrical
Asymmetry is visible in this very modern dining room. Although it doesn’t form a perfect symmetry, the room is still nicely balanced with the artwork on both sides surrounding the table and the big chandelier hanging above the table. The stairs also provide a balance in this area.

7. Balance - Radial
With the circular table in the center and the circular couch wrapping around a good portion of it, it is providing radial symmetry. To even out the other side of the room there are four chairs that are balancing out the weight of all sides surrounding the middle table. This also gives the room a lighter feel.

8. Rhythm - Repetition
This particular rhythm shows repetition in the window structure and design. They are all exactly alike but also lead the eye along all of them. I find repetition to be a subtle way of leading the eye to where you want it to go in a very architectural room like shown in this example.

9. Rhythm – Progression or Gradation
The shapes and accessories in this area represent progression with the seashell bookshelf going from smaller to bigger shelves as it wraps around. The bed also is progressing around the bottom to the top with the tables on the side fitting perfectly above and below each other.

10. Rhythm - Transition
This dining area has many continuous lines throughout showing good examples of transition. With the table being as long as it is and the long lines from the hanging lights, there are many lines that lead your eye along the room. The height of the room adds to the dimension and gives it a nice rhythm.

11. Rhythm – Opposition or Contrast
The windows and shelves along the main wall show a great example of contrast. The windows are longer and vertical shaped while the shelves offset them with their shorter horizontal shape. These angles have a rhythm to them that show opposition and contrast in the framed artwork and flooring as well.

12. Rhythm - Radiation
This ceiling shows radiation through the architectural design of the wood spokes meeting in the center. It gives the room a circular movement with the defined rhythm of the ceiling. This can also show a type of transition with the lines easily leading your eye to the center of the room.

13. Emphasis
Emphasis usually involves a focal point that draws attention to it. In this case a fireplace is a good example of a focal point especially in the winter when it is warm and people gather around it for the heat. This fireplace is a good size that focuses your attention to the wall.

14. Harmony – Unity and Variety
This room shows unity in both the color scheme and the style of the furniture. Within the unity there is a balance of symmetry in how the room is set up. It shows variety in the diversity of the furniture and the statement chairs that are surrounding the table. This room shows a sense of uniformity and oneness.

16. Shape and Form – 2 –Dimensional
This wall shows 2- dimensional shapes with a circle design on the wall. It also has a piece of artwork hanging that has more 2- dimensional shapes that contrast against the other design. I believe these designs show variety in the color schemes but are cohesive when applied together.

17. Shape and Form – 3-Dimensional
3-dimensional shapes bring form to the shapes. In this example I liked the shapes of the lights both hanging from the ceiling and on the table. They are very simple 3- dimensional shapes but show how it takes a 2-dimensional shape like a square or triangle and turns it into a form. In this instance those forms are the light fixtures.

18. Mass – Small or Light
There is a small grouping of white and grey pillows in the center of the room that give it a lighter mass. All of the chairs surrounding the table show small mass in the light, airy sense they give. They aren’t large, solid areas like a sofa so even if there are many chairs shown here they are not dense. This room gives off a lighter look.

19. Mass – Large or Heavy
The large bed and solid ottoman and nightstands are showing a heavier mass. They are filling up space in this larger room which is a good reason to find heavier furniture. The chandelier has a large mass as well in comparison to a standard light or fan. This is also showing a focal point with the architectural design of the bed and the color scheme. It draws your eye to the center of the room.

20. Line - Vertical
This picture has many vertical lines that outline the whole room. This makes the room feel like it is taller and has more height. The long vertical lines surround the majority of the room but it also has horizontal lines in the big staircase and other features. This gives the room variety but also unity.

21. Line - Horizontal
There are many horizontal lines in this room but the main one your eye is lead to is the white wall. These horizontal lines give the room width and make it feel longer than it is. This wall can also serve as the focal point in the room because that is where the eye focuses on. This is a simple example but shows how it can change the look of the room with one element.

22. Line - Curved
This staircase is a great example of curved lines. It gives the room a classic, sophisticated look and the curves soften the design. Curves can be used to show movement and flow. In this example the staircase shows grace and beauty along with a good rhythm in the entry way to this home.

23. Texture - Smooth
This kitchen is full of smooth textures. Not only are the surfaces smooth but the look comes across that way as well. I think the lines help determine whether the look comes across as smooth or rough. In this case there are many clean vertical and horizontal lines incorporated into the kitchen.

24. Texture - Rough
The two walls shown in this living room are good examples of showing rough texture. The wall behind the TV visually looks rough to the touch with all the ridges. That look of rock and stone automatically give it a good look of texture. There is also some texture shown in the wall behind the stairs with the ripples.

25. Pattern
There are many forms of design shown in this small place. The patterns are all very different but have unity in the color scheme. There is pattern shown on the wall and the floor. The pillows and the blanket also have a cohesive pattern that follow along with the surrounding patterns. This style makes me think of a vacation area in an outdoor environment.

26. Light - Natural
Natural light is easily seen in this picture through the big windows that line the room. Not only are they large but they fill up a good portion of the space allowing lots of natural light into the room. It makes this space look big and welcoming. It is a very inviting space.

27. Light - Artificial
Artificial light makes up for not having enough natural light in a room. In this picture it is evident there is a lack of windows and the need for artificial light is shown. This lighting provides many shadows throughout the room which can make this space seem smaller and more formal.

28. Color
The colors in this room are very saturated with blues and yellows. The blue provides a calm feeling while the yellow is more stimulating. The yellow is a pop of color that gives a little contrast to all of the blue in the room. Color is a way to show emotion in a room and depending on what colors they are, they can prove to have different responses.
