Agenda Turn in your chapter 24 sec 1 notes Recap what we learned on Friday Fascism – a new governmental form! Homework: Chapter 24 sec 2 notes due WEDNESDAY Due FRIDAY: Ch 25 sec 4 and Ch 25 sec 1

Dwight's Speech 10:58-11:50, 15:40-17:26, 17:50-18:50

The Rise of Fascist Leaders Wait, what’s fascism???????? Let’s explore – through quotes from fascist leaders!

What’s fascism? Individually, read through the quotes from fascist leaders. Then, come up with a working definition of fascism. What is it? What is it NOT? What do fascist government require from individuals? Write down your actual definition of fascism in your notes, and be prepared to discuss as a class

What’s fascism? Formal definition: Fascism exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

Wait let’s recap Why are people turning toward fascist leaders in the 1930s? People believed democracy was weak and caused problems

WHAT IS FASCISM? Give students handout (Communism vs. Fascism Chart)

Communism Fascism Definition A theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, with actual ownership given to the community or state. A government system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly oppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism. Political System No leader, directed directly by the people. In reality: a one-party system. One charismatic leader has absolute authority. Often the symbol of the state. Religion Abolished. Worship of the state through nationalism. Key Peeps Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler Economy Classless society in which wealth and control is shared across all the people. No private property. Private ownership, but all is directed and controlled by the state. (“National Socialism”) Social Structure All class distinctions are eliminated. Strict class structure necessary to prevent chaos. Free Choice No leaders (in theory) so everyone makes their own choices freely. The individual is meaningless and is only useful as it serves the state. Discrimin-ation All members are equal. Belief in one superior race that should rule; problems are blamed on other “inferior” races. World View Communism is an international movement; Communists in one country see themselves in solidarity with Communists in other countries. Fascists are ultra-nationalists who see no reason to respect the rights of other nations.

Closure: Compare and contrast fascism and democracy At least three points for each

Closure: When you’re done, flip your paper over. I was trying to find an easy graph to show you on the political scale where fascism and communism would fit. A lot of the graphs directly contradicted each other. Why do you think that is? Explain in terms of point of view. - Based on the definition of fascism you learned today, where do you think it would fall, and why? Back up your argument with evidence.
