Key Terms Communist/ism advocacy of a classless society in which private ownership has been abolished and the means of production and subsistence belong to the community (Marxism, Leninism, Socialism) Proletariat in Marxism, the class of workers, esp. industrial wage earners, who do not possess capital or property and must sell their labor to survive. Totalitarianism/ism absolute control by the state or a governing branch of a highly centralized institution. Authoritarian/ism a governmental or political system, principle, or practice in which individual freedom is held as completely subordinate to the power or authority of the state, centered either in one person or a small group that is not constitutionally accountable to the people.

an economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations, esp. as contrasted to cooperatively or state-owned means of wealth. Liberalist/ism a political or social philosophy advocating the freedom of the individual, parliamentary systems of government, nonviolent modification of political, social, or economic institutions to assure unrestricted development in all spheres of human endeavor, and governmental guarantees of individual rights and civil liberties. Fascist/ism a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.
