Pennsylvania Child Labor Law The intent of the Child Labor Law is to protect the health, safety and welfare of all minors employed in Pennsylvania by restricting employment in certain establishments, the hours of work and the conditions and occupations involved.

Pennsylvania Child Labor Law Minimum Age The minimum age for employment is 14 years old unless you are employed on a farm or domestic service, then there are no restrictions. 12 years old to be a caddy on a golf course. You must be at least 11 years old to deliver newspapers. 7 years old for theater, modeling and television. No restrictions on the motion pictures. Note: Permits are required for all jobs except farm work.

Pennsylvania Child Labor Law Employment Certificates Everyone under 18 years of age needs a employment certificate (working papers).** There are three types of employment certificates; General employment certificate – for any minor no longer enrolled in school. Vacation employment certificate – any minor still enrolled in school. Transferable employment certificate – 16 or 17 year old minors. Can be transferred between employers. (optional) ** Unless you are 17 and graduated or officially terminated from school.

Pennsylvania Child Labor Law An overview of hours of work. 14 and 15 year olds are not permitted to work more than 4 hours per day and not before 7am or after 7pm during the school year. During the summer time 8 hours per day and up to10pm.

Pennsylvania Child Labor Law 16 and 17 year olds Summer time There are no starting and stopping hour restrictions on what can be worked during the summer vacation. But at no time can a minor work more than 8 hours per day or 44 hours per week. School year. Minors are not to work before 6am or after 12am (midnight) on school days and 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. Not more than 8 hours per day and 28 hours per school week.

Pennsylvania Child Labor Law All minors are required to take at least a 30 minute uninterrupted meal break on or before the 5th consecutive hour of work.

Pennsylvania Child Labor Law Prohibited Occupations under 18 Here are few occupations that are prohibited: Billiard rooms Crane and hoisting operations Electrical work Elevator operation Excavating (more that 4 feet deep) Machinery: Woodworking Bakery mixing Cleaning or oiling Punch press Roofing Welding Demolition

Pennsylvania Child Labor Law Prohibited Occupations under 16 Some prohibited occupations are: Bowling centers (except snack bar attendant, control desk clerk and scorer) Building heavy work Highway (open road) Where liquor is sold or dispensed Manufacturing Scaffolds and ladders Window cleaning (above ground)
