European Union’s Energy Policy Targets 20% less greenhouse gas emissions 20% share of renewables 20% better energy efficiency …By 2020 The key goals set by the European Council for the EU sustainable energy strategy can be summarised as follows A unilateral commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20% by 2020 compared to 1990 levels and commitment to reduce by 30% if other developed countries do the same. A commitment to reduce global primary energy use by 20% by 2020 (saving of €100 billion at an oil price of 48 $/barrel and around 780 million tons of CO2 each year). A binding target of increasing the level of renewable energy in the EU's final energy mix from 8,5% in 2005 to 20% by 2020 (previous target 12% by 2010). On 3 December 2008, the EU has struck a deal to satisfy 10% of its transport fuel needs from renewable sources, including biofuels, hydrogen and green electricity, as part of ongoing negotiations on its energy and climate package. The move represents a step back from the original aim of sourcing 10% of the bloc's transport fuels from biofuels alone. The final compromise obliges the bloc to ensure that biofuels offer at least 35% carbon emission savings compared to fossil fuels when the law enters into force – a figure that would rise to 45% by 2013 and 50% by 2017. As of 2017, the target will be raised to 60%. Earlier, the Parliament had asked for an immediate 45% target to be established  2
