Bike to Work Day Ideas for Employer Coordinators Bike to Work Day is Wednesday, June 26, 2019

1. Register your company! Go to biketoworkday.us and follow the steps to register as a Company Coordinator. This simply allows you to get your company set up on the website. Registering your company allows your employees to join your company team when they participate.

2. Hang a poster. Option one: Print your own (You can print a poster out right now from an online resource page) Option two: Order from Smart Commute Metro North (11X17 and smaller posters available)

3. Send an email to your office. A quick, all-office email is the best way to start spreading the word about Bike to Work Day (longer template next page). Short-and-Sweet Email template: Join <Your Company Name> for Bike to Work Day on Wednesday, June 26. Register online for our team now: biketoworkday.us. Stations, group rides, the Business Challenge (we’re competing) and more info available at this website as well. Questions? Contact me!

Longer newsletter template: On June 26, join thousands of commuters for Bike to Work Day and learn how something that’s good for you can also be fun! To register, go to biketoworkday.us. Be sure to join the <Your Company Name> team! There are hundreds of breakfast and afternoon stations throughout the region – you can see which ones are on your way at biketoworkday.us/stations. Curious about what Bike to Work Day is all about? There are many answers to frequently asked questions on the Bike to Work Day website. Additionally, all registered participants qualify for prize drawings, and there is also a fierce company competition – the Business Challenge. More than 32,000 people throughout the metro area got on their bikes last year, and more are expected this year. Bike to Work Day in the north metro area is organized by Smart Commute Metro North, in partnership with the Way to Go program. If you have a long commute and wish to use transit and then ride your bicycle, visit rtd-denver.com for transit schedules and information on taking your bike on the bus or light rail.

4. Email Signature If you have the ability to chose your own email signature, consider adding a small Bike to Work Day message and link to prompt sign-ups. Download images on the “Materials” Page: biketoworkday.us/content/materials This is particularly helpful for internal emails, which don’t always require a corporate brand.

5. Create an intranet “ad” If you have a company intranet, add a Bike to Work Day “ad” on the homepage, with a link to the registration form. There are a variety of pre-built “ads” on the Bike to Work Day materials page to choose from: biketoworkday.us/content/materials

6. Map out nearby stations. Every year there are hundreds of stations in our region offering free food, drink or fun to riders. There is probably one near your office. Take a screen-grab of the Bike to Work Day map zoomed closer to your office location, and then paste the map into a simple document highlighting the nearest stations. Keep it simple! No station nearby? Could your company buy burritos for riders as a perk?

7. Compete with other companies. The Business Challenge is the region-wide competition between businesses on Bike to Work Day. Companies compete by size and county, so you can compete with a neighboring company or a competitor across town. Each company is scored by the “Effort Index,” which allows companies of different sizes to compete against each other fairly. This is an easy way to start a friendly challenge with another employer directly, even if they aren’t the same size as your company. The Bike to Work Day team has helped to organize industry-level competitions (for instance, between Architectural/Engineering companies). Interested in creating some friendly competition? Contact Smart Commute, and we’ll help to put you in touch with the folks you want to challenge.

8. Schedule a workshop or tuneup. You know that one person in your office that is a bike super-star? (Or maybe that’s YOU!) Use this talent to promote Bike to Work Day. Schedule a room over the lunch hour for an info session and workshop to support biking to work. Smart Commute is happy to present to your employees about Bike to Work Day, or we can provide you with a pre-built template (https://smartcommutemetronorth.org/bike-and-walk/biketoworkday/bike-work-day-coordinator-tools/) Consider asking a local bike shop for tune-up coupons that you can give to people who haven’t ridden their bike in a long time!

9. Host a group ride. Group rides are a great way to show company support for biking to work. Connect with the more knowledgeable cyclists in your office and see if they could lead a group ride along their commute. You can promote these group rides to your employees only, or you could invite members of the public to join you by posting your group ride on the Bike to Work Day website: biketoworkday.us.

10. Secure bike parking. Having a place to park a lot of bikes might be a problem at your location. Option One: Repurpose a conference room for the day to serve as secure bike parking. Option Two: Rent “event fencing” from an event vendor, which can double as a bike rack. Option Three: Make your own for $25 with a great guide by Northeast Transportation Connections: smartcommutemetronorth.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/DIY-Bike-Racks.pdf

11. Schedule a lunchtime sharing session on Bike to Work Day Bike to Work Day participants love swapping stories – facilitate this natural morale-booster by formally scheduling a lunchtime meet-up. Encourage employees to bring in and share photos from their trip, swag they grabbed at a station, or funny excuses for why they didn’t ride their bike that day (so non-participants can also join in the fun). Use our pre-made template to help you plan and execute this event: https://smartcommutemetronorth.org/bike-and-walk/biketoworkday/bike-work-day-coordinator-tools/

12. Buy (or commission) t-shirts for participants. Do you have a budget for Bike to Work Day? Consider getting Bike to Work Day t-shirts for employees who participate – this is a great incentive to sign-up. You can also include your company logo with the shirts. Option One: order pre-designed shirts from the official Bike to Work Day t-shirt vendor (instructions on the website). Company logos can be placed on the sleeve for an extra per-shirt (and set-up) cost. Option Two: Design or commission your own t-shirts (the Bike to Work Day artwork is free for use, and if you have a favorite t-shirt vendor, feel free to commission your own t-shirts from them).

Thanks for Promoting Bike to Work Day! Bike to Work Day in the north metro is facilitated by Smart Commute. Connect with us: smartcommutemetronorth.org.
