A Competitive Event Effort Index –balancing effort by size 𝑬𝑰= 𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝟐×𝑻𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒚𝒆𝒆𝒔 The effort index is designed to create a level playing field between companies of different sizes. On the average, participation decreases with the square root of company size. For instance, companies with 10 employees average 60% participation, while those with 1,000 employees average 6%. When graded on this index, winners from previous years had an effort index between three and six, meaning their participation was three to six times higher than expected participation for a company of that size. 2017 Business Challenge Winners: Davis Partnership Architects (EI=6.64) Plexus Bridgepoint/Ashford U/U of the Rockies Navigant Boa Technology hord coplan macht NCAR/UCAR La Sportiva NA Jacobs Seagate (EI=3.51) <Your Company Score, if known>

6 Common Fears “I’m out of shape.” Ride at an easy pace. Try your route on a weekend to test. “I’ll smell.” Unless in training, most bike commuters don’t need to shower at work; just ride at an easy pace to stay cool and dry. “I have to dress up for work.” Keep a set of clothing at work, or pack clothes to change into when you get to work that day. “My bike is old and beat-up.” Buy local by visiting a local bike shop for a tune-up before Bike to Work Day. “The roads aren’t safe.” Be a defensive cyclist, and make eye-contact with drivers as you ride. Always follow the rules of the road (the same rules as apply to drivers). Wear bright clothing, and a helmet.
