BOSE® Professional Installation System BPIS Technical Training

What is BPIS? The Professional Installation System enables a LIFESTYLE® system from Bose to be fully integrated into your home.

… BOSE® Professional Installation System ? ? ? LIFESTYLE® SA-3 ACOUSTIMASS® 5 LIFESTYLE® SA-3 LIFESTYLE® SA-3 FreeSpace® 51 … COMMENT A professional installation would require the installer to fabricate a plate that would allow him to send the signal from the Music Center into the wall. This wall plate would also allow the installer to use industry standard audio cable to run the signal to the location of the Acoustimass® module. Once this cable was delivered to a spot close to the Acoustimass module the installer would again fabricate a custom plate to allow his in-wall cable to be compatible with the supplied Bose audio input cable. The same approach was also required for sending the Cube Speaker wires from the Acoustimass module into the wall and over to each Cube Speaker. As you may guess, this usually meant the installer had to do a lot of soldering and “modifying” of the Bose audio input cable while on the job site. This not only was time consuming but it also created a lot of opportunities for errors and guesswork. DISCUSSION ACTION / ACTIVITY NOTE COMMENT This is how it has been DISCUSSION ACTION/ACTIVITY (click thru builds indicating that there must be some type of interface when the wiring goes thru the walls) NOTE ? ? ?

BOSE® System Cable II Bose® link 034523 5/PR 22 AWG TYPE CM In-wall cable with Bose marking – Easier for installers to identify the right cable 5 shielded wire pairs and drains (10 conductors with 5 drain wires) 150 meter and 300 meter rolls available To be used with BPIS Series II plates (latest) The old yellow Bose System cable can still be used if you exclusively use SA-2 and SA-3 amplifiers. If you also want to connect older products like the ACOUSTIMASS® 20P you have to use the new grey cable. NOTE While there are “equivalent” wires available from different suppliers they do not necessarily offer the exact wire color scheme. Some alternate wire schemes use a solid black wire for each wire pair rather than a colored stripe. The BOSE® system cable makes it easy to identify which wire pair these wires are from because they have a matching stripe. (e.g. The black wire from a White pair will display a white stripe along the insulation.) COMMENT Read and go “CSA – The Canadian Standards Association - the electrical regulations governing body in Canada.” DISCUSSION ACTION/ACTIVITY NOTE

Interconnect jumper BOSE® link cable – Type A Usage: Daisy-chain two or more SA amplifiers Length: 60 cm Color: Black COMMENT: The 60 cm version of the BOSE® link A cable (a.k.a. “Jumper cable”) can be used to provide the installer with a short interconnect cable that can be used to daisy-chain between amplifiers that are mounted right next to each other, possibly in a utility space. This cable is 60 cm long and black in color to match the SA amplifiers it connects too. Several SA stereo amplifiers can be connected in series using the 60 cm BOSE® link A cable. Any length BOSE® link A cable will work, but the 60 cm version will create a neat installation of a centralized stack of amps. NOTE: All BOSE® link A cables are interchangeable with each other. So if you need a longer or shorter cable any of these cables can be used in it’s place. Note: BOSE® link B cables are not interchangeable.

Why two different cables Type A and B? Couldn’t we always use a type A cable with all pins assigned? 321® and WAVE® Radio/Music Systems have a signal (WMS: CD-Changer power supply) assigned to these pins! Have to be connected with a BOSE® link Type B cable

BOSE® link cable – Distributor Extension/Expansion cable – 2 in 1 Type A Extension: 15 m Expansion: Distributor – 4 female connectors The 15 m Extension/Expansion cable will provide two solutions in one. For the single room expansion DYI customer, this cable will provide a 15 m extension to the remote room. For customers looking to expand into several room, this cable will permit several products to be connected directly to this cable. note: the SA amplifiers permit daisy-chaining of amplifiers, so you can connect more than four products to this cable.

Source/Destination Plate Connections Wall plates: Color-coded terminals Quick and consistent connection of BOSE® link System Cable All wall plates come with a simple to understand “quick install guide” in the box.

Main Room Connection Detail Source/Destination Plate SOURCE: Match color for color & connect the drain wires COMMENT: The following termination instructions apply to the installation of a Source/Destination plate in the Main (Home Theater) room and at the Source end of a Bose® link room. This would include the plate located behind the Media Center, a Lifestyle® Home Theater ACOUSTIMASS® module (Main Room) or behind a Local Source device. When connecting the BOSE® link System Cable to the Source/Destination plate strip 5 mm insulation off each wire. Start by connecting the Solid Blue wire and the drain wire included with the Blue wire pair to the screw terminal with the label of a Blue/Grey stripe on a blue background. Connect the Blue Striped wire to the screw terminal with the Blue Stripe label on it. Connect the Red Striped wire to the screw terminal with the Red Striped label on it. Connect the Green Striped wire to the screw terminal with the Green Stripe label on it. Connect the Solid Green wire to the screw terminal with the Solid Green label on it. Connect the Drain wires from the Green wire pair and White wire pair to the screw terminal with the label of a grey stripe on a Green/White background. Connect the White striped wire to the screw terminal with the White stripe label on it. Connect the Solid White wire to the screw terminal with the Solid white label on it. Connect the Solid Red wire to the screw terminal with the Solid Red label on it. Connect the Drain wires from the Yellow wire pair and Red wire pair to the screw terminal with the label of a grey stripe on a Yellow/Red background. Connect the Yellow striped wire to the screw terminal with the Yellow stripe label on it. Connect the Solid Yellow wire to the screw terminal with the Solid Yellow label on it. Source/Destination Plate DESTINATION: Match color for color & connect the drain wires

BOSE® link Room Connection Detail Source/Destination Plate SOURCE: Match color for color & connect the drain wires COMMENT: The following termination instructions should be used when connecting a Source/Destination plate any Bose® link destination solution such as a Bose® link enabled solution (SA amp, 3•2•1 II, and the Destination end of a Local Source plate). When connecting the Bose® link System Cable to the Source/Destination plate strip 5 mm insulation off each wire. Start by trimming back all drain wires so they are not visible outside of the shields. Connect the remaining wires as previously done with the Source end of the cable. Source/Destination Plate DESTINATION: Match color for color & cut the drain wires

Wiring Rules COMMENT: The chart in this slide highlights the Wiring rules that must be applied when connecting a Source/Destination plate in different locations throughout the home. As you can tell from this chart, the only place where it is necessary to trim back the drain wires on a plate is at the destination end of any Bose® link solution. All other locations should be wired exactly as the color-coded label illustrates.

Why trimming drain wires? The drain wires have to be trimmed on the destination side because you are creating a ground loop of two devices connecting the drain wires to source and destination. This might result due to the possible different ground potentials of the devices in a mains hum. Low current wiring is particularly susceptible to ground loops. If two pieces of audio equipment are plugged into different power outlets, there will often be a difference in their respective ground potentials. If a signal is passed from one to the other via an audio connection with the ground wire intact, this potential difference causes a spurious current to flow through the cables, eg: creating an audible buzz at the AC mains base frequency (50 Hz) and the harmonics thereof (100 Hz, 200 Hz, and so on), called mains hum. The solution is to have shielded cables for the low currents, with the shield connected only at the source end.

Speaker Plate Connections Wall plates labeled screw terminals Quick and consistent connection of speaker wire When connecting speaker wire to the speaker plate strip 5 mm insulation off each wire. Be sure to maintain proper polarity on both ends of the wire (+/-).

BOSE® link Hub Extension/Expansion Terminal Block Allows an installer to divide the output of one BOSE® link system up to 10 additional BOSE® link solutions Each terminal strip can accommodate up to 2 BOSE® link system cables Or one Terminal Strip to four Terminal strips + BOSE® link COMMENT: The most common application for this part would be when more than one Bose® link enabled product (e.g. RoomMate® or 3•2•1 series is wired into the BOSE® link network. This solution would allow the installer to connect all BOSE® link System Cables from each location into this terminal block then connect the incoming Bose® link System Cable coming from the Media Center using either the terminal strips or a Bose® link A cable. NOTE: When a single BOSE® link System Cable has been run to a central location (i.e. Utility space) then terminated with a Source/Destination plate, then a Bose® link A cable has been connected to the mini-DIN input of the Extension/Expansion Terminal Block, this Terminal Block can accommodate up to 2 Bose® link System Cables per terminal strip. Providing connection for up to 10 Bose® link System Cables. BOSE® link

Wiring Rules BOSE® link Hub – Exception When connecting the BOSE® link hub, you must connect all the wires including the drains at both the source and the destination
