Presentation transcript:

Do now QUIZ (True or False) Depression is more common in women. Depression is not a weakness, it's a serious health disorder. Suicidal people do not want to die, they want their problems to end. Four out of Five teens who attempt suicide have given clear warning signs. Talking about suicide will cause someone to attempt suicide. Once a person is suicidal, they're suicidal forever. Women commit suicide more often than men. Every 15 minutes someone commits suicide in the U.S., which averages to about 80 deaths per day. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for adolescents.

Facts about Depression When people have depression, it affects their emotions and mood. It twists their way of thinking. •Social withdrawing/ isolation- People with depression may pull away from friends and family or from activities they once enjoyed. Negative feelings and mood: Guilt, Helpless , Alone, Defeated , Sad, Rejected, Hopeless Negative thinking. When somebody has depression, it can cloud everything. The world looks bleak, and the person's thoughts reflect that hopelessness and helplessness.

Why Do People Get Depressed? There is no single cause for depression. Many things play a role, including inherited traits from family members who may have had depression, or living in a difficult family or social environment.

In addition to seeking help try these: 1.Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. 2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. 3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. 4.Express yourself. Take time to play with a friend or a pet. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5.Look on the bright side. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings.
