In 2008, IBM anticipated the emergence of a Smarter Planet IBM Academic Initiative IBM Academic Initiative In 2008, IBM anticipated the emergence of a Smarter Planet Instrumented Interconnected Intelligent https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNtgvLNVVKY

IBM Academic Initiative IBM's pioneering work has infused intelligence into the global management systems that drive human progress and economic growth Many of these applications involved what is called the Internet of Things Traffic systems Food systems Energy grids Water mgmt Supply chains Cities Healthcare Retail

IBM Academic Initiative GSMA “Connected Life” forecast $4.5T in 2020 Top Ten in 2020: Connected Car $600 billion Clinical Remote Monitoring $350 billion Assisted Living $270 billion Home and Building Security $250 billion Pay-As-You-Drive Car Insurance $245 billion New Business Models for Car Usage $225 billion Smart Meters $105 billion Traffic Management $100 billion Electric Vehicle Charging $75 billion Building Automation $40 billion Source:http://www.globaltelecomsbusiness.com/article/2985699/Connected-devices-will-be-worth-45t.html Connected Life is everything that is connected and how they interact: cars, mobile devices, buildings, sensors and people

Today 3 technology forces are converging IBM Academic Initiative Today 3 technology forces are converging Data The basis for competitive advantage Cloud The growth engine for business Engagement Changing expectations, fueled by mobile and social

Data sources are accelerating. IBM Academic Initiative Data sources are accelerating. Almost anything you can think of is becoming an INSTRUMENTED source of data Today Over 9 billion interconnected devices In a few short years Nearly hundreds of billions

The instrumented objects are INTERCONNECTED IBM Academic Initiative IBM Academic Initiative The instrumented objects are INTERCONNECTED Communicating with each other and people Generating massive amounts of DATA yielding new INSIGHTS TRANSACTIONS SOCIAL INTERACTIONS

The potential of Internet of Things lies with INTELLIGENCE IBM Academic Initiative The potential of Internet of Things lies with INTELLIGENCE Applying the power of advanced analytics What did I learn? How do I improve? What is happening? Why did it happen? What could happen? What action should I take?

To innovate, operate, and engage at the next level IBM Academic Initiative To innovate, operate, and engage at the next level Harnessing the power of data, analytics and insight 90% Volume of data created at the edge of IoT that is never captured, analyzed or acted upon. 60% Amount of that data that loses its value within milliseconds of being generated.

Leaders embracing IoT are gaining new value IBM Academic Initiative Leaders embracing IoT are gaining new value Transforming Business Accelerating Innovation Enhancing Operations Improving Engagement Improve product development Optimize asset productivity Increase operational efficiency Deliver new business models Gain real-time responsiveness Explore new revenue opportunities

IBM Academic Initiative IBM is a leader in building and running practical IoT applications for the enterprise, investing $3 billion over the next four years to establish a new IoT business unit IBM IoT Cloud Open Platform for Industries New analytics services that clients, partners and IBM will use to design and deliver vertical industry IoT solutions New IoT services within IBM’s Bluemix Enabling developers to easily integrate IoT data into cloud-based development and deployment of IoT apps Expansion of its ecosystem of IoT partners From silicon and device manufacturers to industry-oriented solution providers

IBM Credentials Help speed up development and delivery cycles. IBM Academic Initiative IBM Credentials Node-Red – Created by IBM, Open-source – Visual coding tool for ‘wiring together flows’. Cuts down time needed to pull together hardware devices, API’s and online services. IBM Bluemix – Created by IBM – Open Standards Cloud platform that allows for building, running and managing apps and services. Easy to use. MQTT – Co-Developed by IBM – Open Standards, Lightweight Messaging Protocol for small sensors. Optimized for high latency and unreliable networks. Help speed up development and delivery cycles. Stepping stone for delivering scalable, interoperable, secure solutions.

IBM Academic Initiative IBM is working with a broad range of global clients to build practical IoT applications for the enterprise Developing fully-connected mobile vehicle solutions with IBM Accesses and analyzes telematics and biometric data from its boats and pilots to make real-time racing decisions Improved the performance and reliability of its appliances.

IBM Academic Initiative What is it? Unique, no-charge program to help teach students market-ready skills. Helps develop world-class curriculum Skill-building opportunities ranging from IBM and ecosystem events to student competitions Help foster ‘digital-savvy’ talent Academic Initiative Webpage

IBM Academic Initiative Internet of Things + Academic Initiative Why is IBM doing this? Explosion of IOT = Need for students to learn how BlueMix can enable innovation Access to open-standards allows students to tackle critical skills Increased time offering allows students to explore various programming languages Students gain innovation ‘hands-on’, cloud based experience. Allows for students to realise and exploit innovative and new solutions.

Reference – Imperial College IBM Academic Initiative Reference – Imperial College Bluemix to the Edge of Space Third year project – Send balloon to edge of space. Balloon is attached to collection of sensors and cameras – Recording and sending data back to earth. Ground Control -> Probe - Data is then tweeted Probe -> Ground Control - Sensors collecting - altitude, light, temperature (internal/external), movement. - Using MQ Light, Internet of Things Foundation, Node-RED, Cloudant services all running on Bluemix. The probes status/location/encountered conditions will be: 1. Distributed via Twitter 2. Represented physically in the IBM Hursley Innovation Center (messaging control of lights etc) 3. Represented virtually by a digital avatar 4. Shown in real-time on Google Maps for anyone to follow 5. The data will be stored on Cloudant, so can be replayed at any time, after the event.
