Today’s Goal: Continue analyzing poems by identifying their language devices. Outcomes: Name five types of language devices used in poetry. Define these terms: Similes, metaphors, personification, imagery, hyperbole. Identify the use of similes, metaphors, personification, imagery, hyperbole in designated poems from your poetry booklet.

Starter #1: Last week we began to examine the language devices frequently used in poetry, words that create images in our mind. Can you recall those literary devices that create images in our mind? Figurative Language (comparisons), such as . . . Similes Metaphors Personification Imagery (appeals to our five senses) Hyperbole (exaggerated images)

Starter #2: Before we continue, let’s review something from our first set of poetry notes. When we talk about rhyme, there’s a term you need to understand fully, because it is used frequently. Without looking at your notes, what do we mean by this term: couplet Turn to the handout I gave you yesterday, “Analyzing Poetry, Part 2.” Let’s see how many language devices we can identify today in our poetry booklets. . . . 1. What is a couplet? When two consecutive lines rhyme (one after the other) and they are about the same length.
