2 Today’s Goal: Learn about making “assertions” as we read and analyze the essay, “Lincoln’s Humor” (PDF online). Outcomes: Define the term “assertion” and identify examples from “Lincoln’s Humor.” Use a graphic organizer to identify assertions and find evidence to support each assertion. Define the term “generalization” and state the overall generalization for “Lincoln’s Humor.” Evaluate the use of humor as a powerful means of communication.

3 Starter #1: Today’s essay is a brief and interesting piece about one aspect of Abraham Lincoln’s life. Friday’s article examined Lincoln’s leadership qualities. Today’s article addresses his sense of humor. But before we read, I am eager to hear your opinion about something Does a person need a good sense of humor to be an effective President? Turn to today’s handout and take out a sheet of paper to make a two-column chart. You will title the chart as, “Lincoln’s Humor.” Now look at the handout that says, “Informational Text,” and create the same column headings as the ones you find on the handout: Assertion (Claim) Evidence (Support) Let’s read the front page of the handout, “Informational Text.”

4 Starter #2: What do we mean by the term “assertion”?
Assertion A statement that makes a particular claim (claims to be true) about something or someone Are assertions factually reliable? That depends on what information the author provides as evidence to back up each claim. As we read today’s essay, you are to play detective. Find as many assertions as you can, then look for evidence to support each assertion. Jot down both the assertion and any evidence you can find to back up each assertion. Let’s turn to the back of the handout and read “Lincoln’s Humor.” You will present the assertions you found immediately afterward.
