Aperture & DSLR Photography

Aperture is used to control depth of focus. As you move between bright and dark environments, the iris in your eyes either expands or shrinks, controlling the size of your pupil. In photography, the “pupil” of your lens is called your aperture. You can shrink or enlarge the size of the aperture to allow more or less light to reach your camera sensor. Aperture is 1 of the 3 factors (exposure triangle) that affects your photo’s exposure

F-Stops Aperture is measured using something called the f-stop scale. On your camera, you’ll see ‘f/’ followed by a number. EX: f/4 or f4

F-Stops

LIMITATIONS Not all apertures are available, depending on the lens you are using. Every lens has a limit on how large or how small the aperture can get. For almost everyone, the maximum aperture will be more important, because it tells you how much light the lens can capture at its maximum (basically, how dark of an environment you can take photos).
