Evolution of Slavery Enslavement of humans is an ancient institution - Sumerians - Greeks - Romans Minor institution in Africa

Europeans change Slavery Europeans need cheap labor to work mines and plantations of new American colonies Initially used Native Americans - Many die due to disease - Many escape and return home.

Early European Slavery Spain brings first slaves to Americas in 1511 to work in copper mines. Portuguese use slaves extensively in sugar plantations in Brazil Conditions so bad that women slaves could not bare children: malnutrition and beatings.
